Civil services aspirants must possess more than just academic knowledge—they need persistence, dedication, and a strong mental framework to conquer both internal and external challenges. This advice comes from District Collector A.K. Kamal Kishore, who spoke at a Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) aspirants’ meet organized at Sri Parasakthi College for Women by The Hindu and Shankar IAS Academy.

Mr. Kamal Kishore, an engineering graduate, shared his own personal journey of preparing for the UPSC examination. He described the exam as one of the most difficult in the world, and it took him three years of continuous hard work to crack it. His wife supported him emotionally and financially throughout this period, taking care of the family and household expenses.

 Overcoming External Challenges

In his speech, Mr. Kishore emphasized the importance of managing external challenges, such as dedicating sufficient time for daily preparation without distractions. This is crucial for success in the UPSC examination, where focus and consistent effort are key. He urged students to create a study schedule and stick to it with discipline, regardless of distractions or difficulties.

 Staying Motivated: Embracing New Challenges

When asked about what keeps him motivated in his work, Mr. Kamal Kishore shared that his motivation comes from setting new challenges for himself every day. He strives for continuous improvement, never allowing himself to become complacent or satisfied with his achievements. This drive for betterment is what enables him to serve people more effectively.

"If I become satisfied with my work, it leads to stagnation. To truly serve the public, I must keep pushing myself to reach new heights," he said. His words inspired the students, showing them that success in civil services requires constant growth and self-motivation.

The Difference Between Civil Servants and Elected Representatives

During the interactive session, a student asked about the difference between the roles of civil servants and elected representatives. Mr. Kamal Kishore explained that elected representatives serve the public for a fixed term of five years, while civil servants have the opportunity to serve the people throughout their entire career until retirement. This longevity of service is one of the unique features of the civil services, allowing dedicated individuals to make a lasting impact on society.

 Encouragement from Shankar IAS Academy

The event also featured B. Arjun Nathan, Madurai Branch Head of Shankar IAS Academy, who answered questions from the 500 students in attendance. His insights helped clarify doubts about the UPSC preparation process, providing valuable guidance to the aspirants.

The principal of the college, Nageswari, was also present, encouraging students to take inspiration from the event and pursue their dreams with determination.

The inspiring words of District Collector A.K. Kamal Kishore and the support provided by Shankar IAS Academy offered invaluable insights to the UPSC aspirants in attendance. With determination, focus, and self-motivation, they were reminded that the dream of serving the nation through civil services is achievable.
