NEET UG 2026: 10 Important Rules You Must Know Before Filling the Application Form

The clock is ticking for students planning to appear for NEET UG 2026. The National Testing Agency (NTA) will soon close the registration window, and if you haven't filled your form yet, this is your final call. But before you rush to submit your application, you need to understand some critical rules that NTA has laid out. One small mistake could lead to rejection of your application, and trust me, you don't want that.

Registration Deadline: Time is Running Out

NTA started the NEET UG 2026 application process on 8th February 2026. Students got about a month to complete their registration. The process will close on 8th March 2026 at 11:50 PM. That means if you haven't registered yet, you're running out of time.

Here's something you should know: on the last day, the website usually gets heavy traffic. This can cause technical glitches. So don't wait until the final hour. Complete your application a day or two before the deadline to avoid any last-minute panic.

How to Fill the NEET UG 2026 Form

The process is straightforward. Visit the official website nta.ac.in or neet.nta.nic.in. Click on the 'New Registration' link on the homepage. Fill in the required details to generate your application number and password. Log in with these credentials and complete the full application form. Upload the documents they ask for, pay the fee, and download the confirmation page. Keep a printout safe for future reference.

Application Fee Structure

The fee varies based on your category. General category students need to pay Rs 1,700. For General EWS and OBC-NCL candidates, the fee is Rs 1,600. SC, ST, PwBD, and third gender candidates pay Rs 1,000. If you're applying from outside India, the fee is Rs 9,500. Remember, you need to pay online, and your application is only complete after successful payment.

10 Critical Rules You Cannot Ignore

One Candidate, One Form

This is non-negotiable. You can fill only one application form. Some students think they can beat the system by using different mobile numbers or email IDs to submit multiple forms. Don't even try. If NTA catches you doing this, all your applications will be cancelled. You might even be barred from taking the exam.

Email and Mobile Number Must Be Correct

The mobile number and email ID you provide during registration must be accurate and accessible. NTA sends your admit card, OTP, and all updates through these channels. Use your own number or your parents' number. Don't borrow someone else's contact details just to fill the form.

Live Photo is Mandatory

When you submit your form, you need to click and upload a live photo. This photo will be matched with your Aadhaar card photo. If they don't match, you'll need to provide valid supporting documents. Make sure you're in good lighting and the photo is clear.

Aadhaar Verification is Compulsory

During the application process, your identity will be verified through Aadhaar. Your name, date of birth, and gender must match exactly with your Aadhaar details. Any mismatch can lead to rejection. So before you start filling the form, double-check that your Aadhaar information is up to date. Also, make sure your mobile number is linked to Aadhaar.

Exam City Selection Has Changed

This year, NTA has changed the exam city selection process. You won't get to choose four cities like before. Your exam centre will be decided based on your permanent or current address. Once the city is assigned, you cannot change it. So make sure the address you provide is accurate.

Category Certificate Requirements

If you want to claim reservation benefits, select your category according to the central list only. This is especially important for OBC-NCL candidates. You must choose the central list option, not the state list. Using the wrong category can disqualify you from getting the benefits you're entitled to.

Payment Page: Don't Refresh

When you're making the payment, do not refresh the page. I repeat, do not refresh. Refreshing can cause payment failure or duplicate transactions. After the payment is complete, download the confirmation page immediately. This is your proof that you've paid.

Correction Window: Limited Changes Only

NTA will open a correction window from 10th to 12th March 2026. During this period, you can make limited changes like updating your photo or signature. But you cannot change your mobile number, email, or Aadhaar details. So get it right the first time.

APAAR ID is Optional

This year, filling in the APAAR ID is not mandatory. But if you have one, you can include it in your application. It's optional, so don't stress if you don't have it.

Language of Question Paper

NEET UG is conducted in 13 languages: Hindi, English, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. You need to select your preferred language during registration. If you choose English, you'll get the paper only in English. If you choose Hindi or any regional language, you'll get the paper in that language along with English. Once you submit the form, you cannot change the language. So choose wisely.

Exam Date and Schedule

NTA has already announced the exam date. NEET UG 2026 will be held on 3rd May 2026. The exam will be conducted in a single shift across the country from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The total duration is 3 hours or 180 minutes. Your exam centre details will be mentioned on your admit card. Keep checking the official websites nta.ac.in and neet.nta.nic.in for updates on admit card release, exam city information, and results.

Preparing for NEET is tough enough. Don't make it harder by messing up your application form. Read the guidelines carefully, follow these 10 rules, and submit your form before the deadline. Good luck with your preparation.
