India bans 156 combination drugs used to treat fever, cold, allergies

The Indian government has banned 156 fixed-dose combination (FDC) drugs, commonly used to treat conditions like fever, pain, colds, and allergies, citing potential risks to human health. FDCs are drugs that combine two or more active ingredients in a fixed ratio. The decision, made after recommendations from the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) and an expert committee, concluded that these combinations lack therapeutic justification and pose health risks.

The ban, issued under Section 26A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, includes popular combinations such as Aceclofenac + Paracetamol and Cetirizine + Paracetamol + Phenylephrine, among others. The DTAB emphasized that these FDCs could not be justified for patient use, leading to a complete prohibition in the interest of public health
