AFCAT 2027 Complete Guide: Latest Updates, Eligibility, Salary, Top Coaching Institutes & Test Series
Plan AFCAT 2027 with branch eligibility, exam pattern, salary and AFSB, plus Centurion Defence Academy, Major Kalshi Classes, Baalnoi Academy and SSBCrackExams coaching options.
Hello, Air Force aspirants! I’m Runal Naik. AFCAT is the Indian Air Force’s officer-entry test for Flying and Ground Duty branches. The current written format is 100 questions, 300 marks and two hours, followed by AFSB selection and medical checks. Start by matching your qualification to a branch before choosing a course or test series.
This 2027 preparation guide uses the latest official AFCAT 02/2026 notification as its rules reference. Your attempt’s notification sets its exact birth-date limits, approved degree disciplines, vacancies and application dates. A July 2027 training course in a 2026 notice is different from an AFCAT examination held in 2027.
Latest update: technical entry through GATE
The IAF now offers a separate GATE Score Entry for eligible Technical Branch applicants. The Ministry of Defence announcement confirms that shortlisted candidates can proceed directly to AFSB without the AFCAT written test. AFCAT remains an entry route for technical and other eligible branches.
Match both your engineering discipline and GATE paper to the notified list.
The latest notice accepts qualifying GATE scores from the three years preceding course commencement, subject to its conditions.
NCC Special Entry is a separate Flying Branch route with its own Air Wing certificate requirements.
Monitor the official AFCAT portal for your 2027 attempt’s notification and subsequent candidate instructions.
AFCAT eligibility: which branch fits your degree?
Indian citizenship, the prescribed qualifications and medical fitness are required. The table summarises the latest notice; specialist branches have detailed approved-qualification lists.
Branch | Qualification route |
|---|---|
Flying | Pass Class 12 Maths and Physics, plus a recognised three-year degree, four-year BE/BTech, or the specified equivalent professional examination. |
Technical | Pass Class 12 Physics and Maths, plus an approved engineering/technology qualification or the specified equivalent. AE(L) also lists MSc Electronics with BSc Physics. |
Weapon | Pass Class 12 Maths and Physics, plus a recognised three-year degree or four-year BE/BTech. |
Admin / | Pass Class 12, plus a recognised three-year degree in any discipline or the specified equivalent qualification. |
Accounts | Pass Class 12, plus a listed commerce/finance qualification, or qualified CA, CMA, CS or CFA. |
Education | Pass Class 12, graduation and the prescribed postgraduate qualification. |
Meteorology | Pass Class 12, plus BSc with Physics and Maths or an engineering/technology degree from the approved list. |
Flying age: normally 20 to 24; a valid, current DGCA Commercial Pilot Licence permits the notified relaxation up to 26.
Ground Duty age: normally 20 to 26. Calculate age on your course’s specified reference date, using the notification’s exact birth-date range.
Marital status: the latest notice requires candidates to be unmarried at course commencement; marriage is not permitted during training.
Final-year applicants: the latest notice allows applications without a present backlog, subject to completion proof by its deadline.
For technical eligibility, compare the exact degree title on your certificate with AE(L) or AE(M)’s approved disciplines. Similar-sounding engineering branches are not automatically interchangeable.
AFCAT written exam pattern
Item | Current format |
|---|---|
Mode | Computer-based, objective |
Questions | 100 |
Maximum | 300 |
Time | 2 hours |
Language | English |
Correct | +3 marks |
Wrong | -1 mark |
Unanswered | 0 marks |
The tested areas are General Awareness, English, Numerical Ability, and Reasoning/Military Aptitude. The official scheme gives an overall question total; avoid assuming a fixed 25 questions per subject.
English: comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, sentence arrangement and usage.
Numerical Ability: arithmetic, percentages, ratio, interest, averages, time/work, speed/distance and related school-level calculations.
Reasoning/Military Aptitude: verbal reasoning, series, spatial ability and non-verbal patterns.
General Awareness: history, geography, polity, science, environment, defence, sports and current events.
Use the portal’s model papers and computer-based mock familiarisation to practise the interface. Review every mock after applying negative marking and record which errors came from knowledge gaps, calculation or guessing.
AFSB selection, medicals and merit
Written qualification or eligible direct-entry shortlisting: follow the IAF’s result and AFSB call-up instructions.
Stage I screening: Officer Intelligence Rating and Picture Perception and Discussion Test. Document and eligibility checks also matter.
Stage II: psychological tests, group tasks and interview assess officer qualities and suitability.
CPSS: applicable Flying Branch candidates undergo the Computerised Pilot Selection System. A previous CPSS failure affects Flying eligibility.
Medical examination and merit: recommendation alone does not guarantee admission. Medical fitness, merit, preferences and vacancies determine the final allocation.
Prepare truthful examples from your studies, responsibilities, teamwork and daily life. Improve communication and fitness gradually; do not memorise a fabricated personality for AFSB. For another graduate defence route, compare paper demands and academy eligibility in our CDS complete guide.
AFCAT salary and training stipend
Pay item | Amount |
|---|---|
Flying | Level 10 |
Military | ₹15,500 |
Training | ₹56,100 per month |
These figures come from the current notification’s pay section. Allowances depend on branch, duties and posting. Basic pay, stipend and take-home salary are different figures; deductions and applicable allowances affect the amount credited.
Four AFCAT coaching options to evaluate
Coaching is optional. AcademyCheck can help you shortlist support for written preparation, computer-based mocks and AFSB. The options below use current provider-published course and faculty evidence, rather than unverified selection-rate claims.
Centurion Defence Academy
AFCAT fit: its course page describes a day-wise lesson plan, computer-lab practice, digital learning and interview guidance. Computer-based practice is useful if you are unfamiliar with timed online exams.
Faculty: Gp Capt A Basu (Retd.) - 12+ years as an interviewing officer, provider-reported - AFSB/SSB interview mentoring. Confirm your batch’s written-subject teachers separately.
Check: ask for an AFCAT mock report and the number of individual interview-feedback sessions included.
Explore Centurion Defence Academy on AcademyCheck.
Major Kalshi Classes
AFCAT fit: its defence programmes combine written teaching, doubt support, physical preparation and SSB guidance, with online learning available. Check the specific AFCAT batch timetable.
Faculty: Gaurav Agrawal - 10+ years - English; Priyanka Singh - 10+ years - Mathematics; Yogendra Pal - 10+ years - GK, according to the institute.
Check: confirm dedicated Reasoning/Military Aptitude practice and whether AFSB guidance is part of the quoted package.
Explore Major Kalshi Classes on AcademyCheck.
Baalnoi Academy
AFCAT fit: its written-course page lists 60-day and 90-day offline/online formats, English, GK, Maths and military aptitude, plus monthly mocks.
Faculty: Major HS Kalsi - former GTO at SSB Allahabad; individual teaching tenure not stated - officer qualities and GTO guidance.
Check: ask how computer-based mocks are delivered, who teaches aptitude and how written coaching and SSB sessions are packaged.
SSBCrackExams
AFCAT fit: its current online course page lists live/recorded learning, Hindi/English instruction, one-year access and 20 mocks. Check that validity reaches your target exam.
Faculty: Anuradha Dey - 10+ years, provider-reported - English. Request an AFCAT grammar or comprehension lesson and an aptitude demo before paying.
Check: confirm full-length two-hour mocks, explanations, doubt-response times and whether AFSB feedback is sold separately.
Online coaching and test-series selection
SSBCrackExams and Baalnoi list online AFCAT learning; Centurion provides digital content, while Major Kalshi offers online defence classes. Match the purchased product to AFCAT, rather than relying on a general NDA/CDS bundle.
Watch a teaching sample for English and your weakest aptitude area.
Test whether the mock follows 100 questions, two hours and +3/-1 marking.
Look for explanations and an error breakdown that helps you improve the next attempt.
Confirm language, access expiry, device limits, recordings and doubt support.
Compare the complete fee and written/AFSB inclusions in writing.
Application and document checklist
Read your attempt’s notification and select the entry route and eligible branches.
Register on the official AFCAT portal and fill personal, educational and preference details accurately.
