CDS 2027 Complete Guide: Latest Updates, OTA, IMA, Coaching Institutes, Test Series & Selection Process
Compare CDS 2027 OTA and IMA requirements, official dates, written papers and SSB, with Centurion Defence Academy, Major Kalshi Classes, Baalnoi Academy and SSBCrackExams coaching options.
Hello, defence aspirants! I’m Runal Naik. CDS is the graduate-entry examination for IMA, INA, Air Force Academy and OTA. OTA candidates take English and General Knowledge; IMA, INA and Air Force Academy candidates also take Elementary Mathematics. Your academy choice therefore changes both eligibility and your preparation plan.
This guide covers the official 2027 calendar, academy choices, written papers, SSB and coaching options. The selection framework below follows UPSC’s latest CDS II 2026 notification; use the notification for your 2027 attempt for its exact birth-date limits, vacancies and document deadlines.
CDS 2027 dates
UPSC’s Annual Calendar 2027 gives the following schedule. Calendar dates can change through an official revision.
Exam | Schedule |
|---|---|
CDS I | Notification: 2 December 2026 |
CDS II | Notification: 12 May 2027 |
OTA or IMA: choose the right entry
IMA, Dehradun: Army entry leading to a Permanent Commission after successful training. The written exam includes Maths.
OTA, Chennai: Army Short Service Commission entry. The written exam has no Maths paper. The latest CDS notification admits eligible men and women through separate OTA courses.
INA, Ezhimala: Navy entry with its own academic requirements. The written exam includes Maths.
Air Force Academy: Air Force entry with Physics/Maths qualifications and flying aptitude requirements. Maths is part of the written exam.
Choose according to the service, commission and qualifications you want, rather than selecting OTA only to avoid Maths. If you are still in school, compare the Class 12 route in our NDA complete guide before planning a graduate CDS attempt.
CDS eligibility: qualification and age
Academy | Qualification |
|---|---|
IMA / OTA | Recognised university degree or equivalent. |
INA | Engineering degree; or BSc with Physics as a core/elective subject, with Physics and Maths in Class 12. |
Air Force | Recognised university degree with Physics and Maths in Class 12; or Bachelor of Engineering. |
IMA and INA: the latest framework uses ages 19 to 24 and unmarried male candidates.
OTA: ages 19 to 25. Men must be unmarried; eligible women include unmarried candidates and issueless widows/divorcees who have not remarried.
Air Force Academy: ages 20 to 24, with relaxation up to 26 for a valid, current DGCA Commercial Pilot Licence. Candidates below 25 must be unmarried; the notification specifies conditions for married candidates aged 25 or above.
Final-year students: may apply subject to the notification’s conditions, including timely degree proof. Check your university’s result schedule before choosing an attempt.
Other requirements: prescribed nationality and service-specific medical standards apply. Use your matriculation certificate for the accepted date of birth.
INA’s BSc Physics route is included in the latest notification. Check your actual subjects and marksheets instead of relying on an older “engineering only” summary.
Written exam pattern and SSB marks
Route | Papers | SSB |
|---|---|---|
IMA | English: 100 | 300 |
OTA | English: 100 | 200 |
The papers are objective. A wrong answer costs one-third of the marks assigned to that question; an unanswered question attracts no penalty. Maths is at matriculation level, while English and GK are approximately graduate level. Calculators are not permitted. Qualify each required paper as well as the aggregate cutoff.
What to study and how to practise
English: grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, sentence ordering and usage. Review why a distractor is wrong, rather than memorising an answer key.
GK: history, geography, polity, economics, general science and current events. Connect a current issue with its underlying static topic.
Maths, where applicable: arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, geometry, mensuration and statistics. Practise calculations without a calculator.
Attempt an official previous paper in the correct two-hour limit. Record accuracy and unfinished questions by subject.
Build a weekly plan around your weakest required paper. OTA candidates can allocate the Maths slot to English and GK revision.
Complete topic tests before full mocks. Review concept errors, rushed calculations, vocabulary gaps and speculative guesses separately.
Revise the error list before the next mock. Compare scores after negative marking, not just attempted questions.
Start communication, fitness and self-awareness practice alongside written preparation.
Selection after the written exam
Written result: follow UPSC’s result instructions and the relevant service’s registration/call-up process. Keep the same email and accurate personal details.
SSB Stage I: Officer Intelligence Rating tests and Picture Perception and Description Test form the screening stage.
SSB Stage II: successful screened candidates undergo psychological tests, group testing, interview and conference over the following four days.
Medical examination: recommended candidates undergo the prescribed service medical checks. Flying candidates have additional aptitude/medical requirements, including CPSS where applicable.
Final merit: written and SSB performance, medical fitness, preferences and available vacancies determine allocation.
For IMA/OTA first-choice candidates who qualify the written exam, the latest notice requires registration on the Army recruiting website for call-up information. Read your actual result and service instructions before completing that step.
CDS coaching institutes: four options to evaluate
Coaching is optional. AcademyCheck can help you compare a classroom course, online learning or a test series around your target academy. Our research below uses provider-published course and faculty evidence; it does not establish a guaranteed selection rate.
Centurion Defence Academy
Course fit: its current CDS 2027 page describes module-based lessons, weekly Saturday mocks, doubt sessions and SSB exposure. This suits students seeking a structured classroom routine with interview preparation.
Faculty: Gp Capt A Basu (Retd.) - 12+ years as an interviewing officer, provider-reported - SSB interview mentoring; Shishir Dixit - individual teaching tenure not stated - psychology mentoring.
Ask before joining: who will teach your written subjects and conduct your individual SSB feedback? Check the CDS timetable and included interview sessions.

Major Kalshi Classes
Course fit: the Prayagraj institute lists defence written courses, doubt counters, physical training, SSB guidance and online learning. Confirm the CDS-specific programme and academy coverage.
Faculty: Gaurav Agrawal - 10+ years - English; Priyanka Singh - 10+ years - Mathematics; Yogendra Pal - 10+ years - GK. These are the institute’s published faculty details.
Ask before joining: OTA candidates should check how English/GK classes are organised without unnecessary Maths sessions, and whether SSB feedback is included or separately priced.

Baalnoi Academy
Course fit: its CDS written-course page lists 60-day and 90-day formats, five hours daily, offline/online courses and separate OTA subject coverage. Ask for the timetable of the batch you plan to join.
Faculty: Major HS Kalsi - former GTO, SSB Allahabad; individual teaching tenure not listed - officer qualities/GTO guidance. Col Mohanjit Singh is identified with current-affairs sessions and psychology training.
Ask before joining: how much written teaching and SSB practice is included, and how many candidates share each outdoor task? Match the named location to the actual admission offer.
SSBCrackExams
Course fit: an online option listing live and recorded CDS learning, Hindi/English instruction, mocks and one-year access. Confirm access covers your selected 2027 exam date.
Faculty: Anuradha Dey - 10+ years, provider-reported - English. Published CDS English lessons include sentence synthesis, giving you a specific topic to request as a teaching sample.
Ask before joining: check an English lesson, GK explanation and Maths solution if required; confirm the doubt-response process and the OTA mock format.
Online coaching and test-series checks
SSBCrackExams and Baalnoi list online CDS options; Major Kalshi Classes also offers online defence learning. Compare the actual batch rather than the institute’s overall reputation.
Choose English/GK-only mocks for OTA, or all three papers for IMA/INA/AFA.
Inspect a sample lesson for clear reasoning, worked questions and correction of common mistakes.
Check full two-hour paper practice, useful explanations and previous-paper coverage.
Confirm recording validity, language, device limits, doubt support and whether SSB coaching is a separate purchase.
Get the complete fee and inclusions in writing. A large video library is useful only if it fits your weekly study time.
