Sensex and Nifty Rise as IT and Banking Stocks Lead Market Gains

Indian markets opened on a firm note, with the Sensex and Nifty moving higher during the trading session. The Sensex rose 501.72 points, or 0.65 percent, to 77,411.40. The Nifty 50 gained 125.60 points, or 0.52 percent, to 24,203.90.

Banking and IT stocks helped lift the main indexes. The Nifty IT index rose 1.26 percent, while the Nifty Bank index gained 0.67 percent. The Nifty Auto index also moved up, though its gain was smaller at 0.25 percent. On a day when the market looked for direction, these sectors gave investors a reason to keep watching the screen.

Why did the market rise?

Positive global signals supported the Indian market. The GIFT Nifty traded 0.70 percent higher, while Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 1.25 percent. Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1.31 percent. Dow Jones futures showed a smaller gain of 0.03 percent.

These moves do not decide the Indian market on their own, but they can shape investor mood at the start of trading. Lower volatility also helped. The India VIX fell by 5 percent, which points to a drop in expected market swings. A calm VIX can support buying, though it does not remove market risk. Stocks can still change direction faster than a school bell.

IT and bank stocks draw buying interest

Several large companies featured among the top gainers. Eternal rose 2.45 percent on the NSE. Shriram Finance gained 2.15 percent, while JSW Steel climbed 1.80 percent. Infosys moved up 1.58 percent on the NSE and 1.85 percent on the BSE. Financial stocks also gained, with Bajaj Finance and Axis Bank rising on the BSE.

The strength in IT stocks came as investors showed interest in the sector. IT companies often respond to changes in global technology spending, currency movement and demand from overseas clients. Banks and finance companies, in turn, tend to track credit growth, interest rates and loan quality. Investors should study these factors instead of treating a one-day rise as a full investment case.

Stocks that stayed under pressure

The market rise did not lift every stock. On the BSE, Asian Paints fell 0.34 percent, Sun Pharma declined 0.30 percent and UltraTech Cement slipped 0.16 percent. ITC also ended slightly lower.

On the NSE, ONGC fell 0.78 percent, while Asian Paints lost 0.80 percent. Max Healthcare and Hindalco also traded lower. This mix shows why investors should look beyond the headline index. A rising Sensex does not mean that every portfolio will rise. Your stocks may choose a different path, as stocks often do without asking anyone's permission.

Most active stocks by value

Trading activity was high in several names. Netweb led the list of most active stocks by value, with trades worth Rs 868.75 crore. Its share price rose by Rs 291 to Rs 5,356. Shiprocket recorded a traded value of Rs 837.12 crore and gained Rs 6.60 to reach Rs 150.05.

Behari Lal Engineering saw a traded value of Rs 742.09 crore, while BSE Limited recorded Rs 642.83 crore. Milky Mist was also active, but its share price fell by Rs 5.53. High trading value can show strong interest, but it does not confirm that a stock will keep rising. Investors need to check earnings, debt, valuation and business plans before taking a position.

IPO and company news to track

Lalithaa Jewellery Mart IPO allotment was due on the day covered in the market update. Applicants can check their allotment status through the registrar or the stock exchange websites. Investors should use only official links and avoid sharing PAN, bank details or one-time passwords with unknown callers.

Strides Pharma shares jumped 7.5 percent after the US Food and Drug Administration cleared its Bengaluru facility. Regulatory clearance can support investor confidence, but the long-term effect depends on product approvals, sales and future compliance.

In another IPO-related development, Rosewood Investments and Motilal Oswal sold more than 10 percent stake worth Rs 648 crore in Symbiotic Pharmalab before its issue opened. Large stake sales can affect investor views, so readers should check the offer documents for details on the selling shareholders and use of funds.

Foreign and domestic investor flows

Foreign institutional investors recorded net buying of Rs 407.99 crore on August 19. Domestic institutional investors bought shares worth a net Rs 3,973.72 crore on the same day. On August 18, FII net buying stood at Rs 1,651.53 crore, while DII buying came to Rs 2,579.31 crore.

Institutional flows can affect short-term market moves, but they should not replace company research. Investors also need to watch the rupee, crude oil prices, US interest rates and corporate earnings. These factors can change the market view within a few hours.

SEBI alert for investors

SEBI has warned investors about people who claim to represent Moneycontrol and promise assured returns. Moneycontrol does not ask investors to send funds and does not promise fixed returns. Treat any such message as a warning sign. Do not transfer money to a personal account, install unknown apps or share trading passwords.

Investors who receive such offers can report them to the grievance officer at grievanceofficer@nw18.com or call 02268882347. Before acting on a stock tip, check the source, read company filings and understand the risk of loss.
