There is no separate NIRF category called Science. Students looking for science courses should check the University, College, Research Institutions or Overall rankings. They should also review the department, course structure, laboratory facilities and research work.
How NIRF ranks institutes
NIRF uses five main parameters to assess institutions:
| Parameter | Weightage | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Teaching, Learning and Resources | 30% | Faculty, student-teacher ratio, classrooms and funds |
| Research and Professional Practice | 30% | Research papers, patents, projects and industry work |
| Graduation Outcomes | 20% | Graduation rates, placements and higher studies |
| Outreach and Inclusivity | 10% | Student diversity, access and support for disadvantaged groups |
| Perception | 10% | Views of employers, academic peers and the public |
The weightage can vary for some categories and types of institutions. NIRF also added the Sustainable Development Goals category in 2025. It introduced negative marking for research paper retractions under the research parameter.

What is a good NIRF rank?
A rank within the top 100 can give students a useful starting point. Ranks 1 to 25 often include leading national institutes. Ranks 26 to 100 include institutions with strong academic resources and graduate outcomes. Institutes beyond the top 100 may also offer good courses, fees and placements.
Rank alone should not decide your college choice. Check the course syllabus, total fees, hostel cost, location, admission route, faculty, placement report and median salary. A college with a lower overall rank may have a stronger department for the course you want.
NIRF and NAAC are not the same
NIRF compares institutes through an annual ranking. NAAC assesses quality through accreditation and grades such as A++, A+ and B. NIRF uses data such as research output, placements and graduation results, while NAAC also uses expert visits to review teaching, infrastructure and management.
Students should use both where available. They should also read the latest placement report and visit the official college website before making an admission decision.
