NID DAT 2027 Complete Guide: Latest Updates, Design Aptitude Test, Coaching Institutes & Test Series
NID DAT dates, eligibility, integrated M.Des pathway and test stages, with Creative Edge, SILICA Institute, BRDS and Pahal Design coaching options.

Hello design aspirants! I'm Runal Naik from AcademyCheck. NID's 2027-28 applications close on 30 November 2026 at 11:59 PM IST, and DAT Prelims is on 20 December 2026. This admission cycle also introduces a 5.5-year integrated M.Des pathway. Choose your programme first, then organise your application, drawing practice and coaching shortlist.
Which NID programme should you choose?
The official NID admissions portal separates school-leaver and postgraduate applications:
After Class 12: the 5.5-year Professional Education Programme M.Des (Integrated Pathway) at Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Bengaluru. The handbook also covers B.Des/integrated programmes at NID Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh; courses and seats depend on the respective institute.
After a bachelor's degree or recognised equivalent: the separate M.Des route. Ahmedabad and its extension campuses offer a 2.5-year programme; Madhya Pradesh and Haryana have separate applications and programme announcements.
You cannot apply simultaneously for the school-leaver route and the separate M.Des examination because their Prelims tests are conducted at the same time. Do not choose a postgraduate application merely because the integrated undergraduate-entry programme also uses the M.Des name.

Eligibility: school-leaver route
The B.Des/integrated handbook accepts recognised 10+2 or eligible equivalent qualifications from any stream, including Science, Arts, Commerce and Humanities. Its date-of-birth thresholds are:
Applicant category | Born on or after |
|---|---|
Indian General/EWS | 1 July 2006 |
Indian OBC-NCL/SC/ST | 1 July 2003 |
Indian PwD | 1 July 2001 |
Overseas category | 1 July 2006 |
Appearing applicants must meet the qualification-verification conditions and submit their qualifying marksheet by 15 July 2027. Check the first-attempt and backlog restrictions before assuming a provisional offer guarantees admission.
For the separate M.Des route, use the M.Des handbook: the current handbook requires a bachelor's degree or a recognised equivalent, subject to the named programme conditions. It does not establish a separate blanket four-year diploma route. The ordinary General/EWS birth threshold is 1 July 1995, reserved OBC-NCL/SC/ST 1 July 1992 and PwD 1 July 1990. Design Education has different eligibility provisions. Final-year applicants must complete the qualifying examination by 28 June 2027 and submit final results by 31 July 2027.
Application fee and submission steps
For Indian applicants to the B.Des/integrated route:
Applicant category | Application fee |
|---|---|
General/EWS/OBC-NCL | ₹3,000 |
Female, except SC/ST/PwD | ₹2,000 |
SC/ST | ₹1,500 |
PwD or Third Gender | ₹500 |
Bank/convenience charges are additional; application fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. Separate M.Des applications use their own fee rules.
Select the correct programme on the official portal and register with your own active contact details.
Complete personal, academic and category information. Prepare your photograph, signature and applicable prescribed certificates.
Review everything before payment. Programme, name, date of birth, registered mobile and email cannot be changed during the edit window.
Pay the applicable fee and download/print the auto-generated application. The application is complete only when that form is available.
Download and print the Prelims admit card when released. Check the reporting instructions, centre and test duration; shortlisted candidates need a separate Mains admit card.
DAT pattern: what the 2027 handbook confirms
Stage | Confirmed structure |
|---|---|
Prelims | English-only paper-and-pencil/pen test, using text and visual questions. |
B.Des/integrated Mains | Studio Sensitivity Test and In-Person Sensitivity Test. |
Separate M.Des Mains | Studio Test and discipline-wise interviews under the applicable institute's process. |
Prelims is used for shortlisting; its score is not carried into the final result. For the school-leaver route, approximately 2.5 times the seats per category are shortlisted, subject to the tie-break rules. Both Mains components must be attended.
Test duration will be given on the admit card. The handbooks do not establish a fixed 2027 question count, marks split or final Mains component weighting yet. Avoid preparing around an old 20:80 or 60:40 formula.
Drawing practice, papers and a workable plan
Use historical papers for skills and unfamiliar prompts, rather than as a promise of the next paper's format. Separate an official past paper from a coaching-created mock. Practice observation, spatial thinking, visual communication and explaining the purpose of your design.
Daily: draw an everyday object from two viewpoints; note proportion, depth and usability.
Alternate days: solve an original design problem, such as making a school bag easier to access while seated. Show alternatives and explain your choice.
Weekly: attempt a timed mixed task, review unfinished work and redraw one weak response after feedback.
For Mains: develop hands-on material exploration and explain your decisions aloud; follow the later official stage instructions.
Creative Edge's two-point perspective foundation lesson demonstrates a horizon line, two vanishing points and a cube built with light construction lines. The reviewed opening segment compares close and distant vanishing points. This is a useful drawing-method preview, rather than proof of a paid batch's feedback quality.
Deepika Sharma - 4+ years, provider-reported - Design Drawing mentor. Her public lesson provides observable teaching evidence; confirm your assigned batch mentor separately.
Offline and online coaching options
Coaching is optional, and NID does not authorise coaching classes or franchises. AcademyCheck can help you compare the preparation format and support you actually need. These four options are a shortlist, not a ranking.
Creative Edge: its NID 2027 catalogue separates weekday, weekend and dropper live batches from recorded self-learning. Choose scheduled teaching if you need a routine; choose recordings if you can practise independently. Check individual sketch-feedback access, not just video counts. See the Creative Edge Jaipur profile and its English-only 2027 self-learning course.
SILICA Institute: its 2027/2028 online page describes drawing/design aptitude, assignments, mocks, personalised feedback and one-to-one/live-chat doubts. This can suit students needing correction of their work. Ask to see an evaluated drawing. Check the online mode on the SILICA Preet Vihar profile.
BRDS: offers classroom regular/weekend/crash formats alongside live Zoom teaching, recorded LMS resources and separate Mains preparation. Decide whether you need a physical studio routine or remote lessons. Confirm that your selected course includes the new sensitivity-test preparation.
Pahal Design: lists NID regular/crash online formats, live and recorded lessons, mock discussions, printed/digital material and doubt support. Its classroom option is represented by Pahal Design Noida; the profile's UCEED course is a different exam product.
For a broader historical shortlist, read our NID online coaching article. Use the current handbooks above for admission rules.
Choosing a test series
SILICA advertises NID sample papers and mocks; Pahal lists test discussions and PYQs; Creative Edge and BRDS combine tests with their preparation programmes. Compare the NID courses on AcademyCheck by mode and exam coverage.
Ask for the number of NID-specific papers, separate from mixed NIFT/UCEED bundles.
Review one question and its feedback: does it address the idea, proportion and communication, or only give a score?
Check evaluation turnaround, resubmission support, access expiry and whether Mains preparation costs extra.
Our course-comparison guide explains how to use exam, format and mode filters before choosing a programme.
After results: your next admission steps
Download and preserve your scorecard promptly; the handbook gives a limited 20-day download window after release. After school-leaver DAT Mains results, submit the separate online admission application required for seat allotment. Missing that step can exclude you even with a valid score. Follow the institute's choices, document verification and fee-payment deadlines.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can Commerce students apply?
Yes, recognised 10+2 qualifications from any stream are accepted for the school-leaver route, subject to the full eligibility conditions.
2. Does the integrated M.Des require a bachelor's degree?
No. It is the school-leaver pathway; the separate postgraduate M.Des application has bachelor's-degree or recognised-equivalence requirements in the current handbook.
3. Can I use a state OBC certificate?
OBC-NCL eligibility requires the applicable Central-list and prescribed Central-format conditions. A state-only listing does not establish entitlement.
4. Does one admit card cover both stages?
No. Prelims and Mains admit cards are separate downloads.
5. Is exam accommodation provided?
NID does not provide accommodation for Mains candidates. Plan travel and accommodation after the official venue and schedule are available.
Summary
Choose the correct route, submit a complete application by 30 November and prepare for the 20 December Prelims. Build a feedback-and-redrawing routine, then follow the separate Mains and admission steps. Wishing you a thoughtful and confident design journey!
