NMMSS 2026-27 Deadline Extended: Eligibility, Scholarship and Application Guide
The NMMSS 2026-27 deadline is 31 October. Check eligibility, scholarship benefits, application steps and verification dates on the National Scholarship Portal.

Students can now get more time to apply for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme, or NMMSS, for the academic year 2026-27. The Ministry of Education has extended the application deadline to 31 October 2026.
The scheme helps talented students from families with limited income continue their studies after Class 8. If you or your child plans to apply, do not wait for the last day. Online portals can become slow when many people log in at once. Even the internet sometimes likes to test our patience.
What is the NMMSS?
NMMSS is a Central Government scholarship scheme for students studying in eligible government schools. It aims to reduce school dropouts and help students study from Class 9 to Class 12.
Every year, the scheme offers one lakh fresh scholarships to students who qualify through a selection examination held by their State or Union Territory. After selection, students can receive the scholarship from Class 9 to Class 12 through renewal, if they meet the required academic conditions.
How much financial support is available?
Each selected student receives ₹12,000 per year. The amount is sent to the student’s bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer, also called DBT.
DBT helps send the money straight to the correct account. Students and parents should make sure that the bank account details are correct and linked as required. A small error in account details can cause a large delay.
Who can apply for NMMSS 2026-27?
Students should check all the conditions before starting the application. The main eligibility rules include:
- The student must study in a state government, government-aided or local body school.
- The student must qualify for the NMMSS selection examination conducted by the State or UT.
- The student must have scored at least 55 per cent marks, or an equivalent grade, in Class 7.
- SC and ST students get a relaxation of five percentage points in the Class 7 marks requirement.
- The annual parental income must not be more than ₹3.50 lakh.
Students should also check the latest instructions issued by their school and State or UT education department. State-level rules may explain the test date, exam process and document requirements.
Important dates for applicants
The last date to submit an NMMSS application for 2026-27 is 31 October 2026.
Submitting the form is only the first step. Applications must also pass two levels of verification:
- Institute Nodal Officer verification: by 15 November 2026.
- District Nodal Officer verification: by 30 November 2026.
Students should contact their school if the application remains pending after submission. The school may need to check or correct details before the verification deadline.
How to apply on the National Scholarship Portal
- Visit the official National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in.
- Create an account or log in using the details requested on the portal.
- Select the NMMSS scholarship for the academic year 2026-27.
- Enter the student’s personal, school, academic, income and bank details.
- Upload the documents asked for on the portal.
- Review every detail before submitting the form.
- Save or print the application number and acknowledgement for future use.
Keep the student’s name, date of birth and bank details consistent across records. Parents should check the form once, and then check it again. The second check often finds the missing digit hiding in plain sight.
What applicants should do after submission
After submitting the form, students should track its status on the National Scholarship Portal. They should also speak to the school nodal officer and ask whether the application has been verified.
Students who have already applied should make sure their application reaches the Institute Nodal Officer by 15 November and the District Nodal Officer by 30 November. An application that is submitted but not verified may not move forward for scholarship processing.
As of 30 September 2026, more than 88,000 fresh applications and over 1.97 lakh renewal applications had been submitted. Students who meet the rules should use the extended time to complete the form and check the verification status before the dates set by the Ministry of Education.
