NEET PG 2026 Eligibility Criteria: Age Limit, Qualification and Attempts Explained

If you are gearing up for NEET PG 2026, the first thing to sort out is not your study schedule. It is checking whether you actually qualify to sit for the exam. Sounds basic, right? But every year, students miss out because they overlook a small detail in the eligibility list. Let's make sure that does not happen to you.

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) opened the NEET PG 2026 application window on July 1 and closes it on July 21. Before you rush to fill the form, take five minutes to read through the eligibility conditions below.

Who Can Apply: The General Rules

Here is some good news right away. There is no age limit for NEET PG. Whether you are 24 or 44, you can apply as long as you meet the other conditions. There is also no cap on the number of attempts. You can appear for the exam as many times as you want until you land the seat you are aiming for.

Now for the qualification part. You need an MBBS degree from a college recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI). If you have not received your final degree yet, a Provisional MBBS Pass Certificate works too.

Internship is where students often trip up. You must complete your one-year compulsory rotatory internship on or before September 31, 2026. Miss this deadline and you will have to wait for next year's exam. So if your internship is dragging on, keep a close eye on the calendar.

Last on the general list is the Registration Certificate. You need a valid one from the MCI or your State Medical Council. Carry a copy on exam day, because without it, you will not be allowed inside the exam hall. No exceptions.

Rules for Foreign Medical Graduates

Did you complete your medical degree outside India? The path is a little different for you. First, you need Indian citizenship or an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card.

Next, you must clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). This is a licensing exam, and passing it is mandatory before you can register with the MCI. Once you clear it, you get a Pass Certificate. Bring this certificate to the exam centre, since it works as proof of your eligibility.

Your internship deadline is slightly earlier too. Foreign medical graduates must finish their internship by July 31, 2026. After that, register with the MCI or your State Medical Council and keep that certificate handy for verification.

Rules for Foreign Nationals

If you are a foreign national planning to apply, the process looks a bit lighter on paperwork. You need a basic medical qualification recognised by the Medical Council of your home country, and you must be registered with the relevant authority there.

Here is the interesting part. You do not need an MCI Registration Certificate to apply. But if you clear NEET PG and secure a seat, you will need to pay a registration fee to the MCI. In return, you get a temporary registration that stays valid only for the duration of your course.

Already Doing a Master's Degree?

Some students are already enrolled in a PG course and wonder if they can still apply for NEET PG 2026. The answer is yes, you can apply. But here is the catch: some universities do not allow you to join a new course until your current one is finished. So before you get excited about a new specialisation, check the specific rules of the institute you want to join.

Filling the Application Form

Once you have ticked off every eligibility box, head to natboard.edu.in to fill the NEET PG 2026 application form. The process involves registering, filling in your details, uploading photos and signatures, and paying the fee.

A small tip that saves a lot of stress later: read the image upload guidelines carefully. Blurry photos or wrong file sizes are a common reason for rejected forms. Also, check every field twice before hitting submit. There is no undo button once the form goes through.

Quick Answers to Common Doubts

How many times can I attempt NEET PG? As many times as you like. There is no limit set by NBE.

How many students appear for NEET PG each year? Roughly 2 to 2.4 lakh candidates sit for the exam annually, based on recent years.

Is 535 marks a good score? Yes, that generally places you in the top 1000-2000 rank range, which usually opens the door to a government college seat.

Eligibility criteria might seem like fine print, but getting them right is the first real step toward your PG seat. Read the official information bulletin once more before you submit your form, just to be safe.
