NEET 2026 Cut Off for Top 20 Government Medical Colleges: Category-Wise Ranks

Getting into a top government medical college is the dream of every NEET aspirant. If you appeared for Re NEET 2026 and want to know your chances of admission, understanding the cutoff ranks for top government MBBS colleges is your first step.

The NEET cutoff for government medical colleges changes each year based on various factors. While the official cutoff ranks for 2026 will be available only after counselling, we can look at previous year data to get a clear picture of what to expect.

What Does NEET Cutoff Mean?

NEET cutoff has two aspects. First, there is the qualifying cutoff, which is the minimum score you need to pass the exam. Second, there is the admission cutoff, which is the rank you need to secure a seat in a particular college.

For 2026, the qualifying cutoff for General category candidates is expected to be around 140 marks out of 720. For OBC, SC, and ST candidates, it drops to around 113 marks. But qualifying is just the first hurdle. Getting into a good government college requires much higher scores.

Expected Safe Scores for MBBS Admission

Based on previous year trends, here is what you need to aim for:

If you scored above 680 marks, you have strong chances of getting into top tier government colleges like AIIMS Delhi, MAMC Delhi, or JIPMER through All India Quota counselling.

Scores between 620 and 680 give you solid chances of admission to government MBBS colleges through the 15% All India Quota.

If you scored between 600 and 620, you still have safe chances for government colleges. Scores between 550 and 600 open doors to state government medical colleges through the 85% state quota counselling.

Below 550, your options for government colleges become limited, but private colleges remain an option.

Top Government Medical Colleges: Opening Ranks

The opening rank tells you the highest rank that got admission in round 1 counselling. AIIMS Delhi tops the list with an opening rank of 1 for General category in the previous year. This means the student with All India Rank 1 chose AIIMS Delhi.

For OBC candidates, AIIMS Delhi had an opening rank of 52. SC category saw an opening rank of 53, while ST category had 197.

Other top colleges like Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) had an opening rank of 54 for General category, 251 for OBC, 745 for SC, and 1867 for ST.

JIPMER Puducherry showed opening ranks of 50 for General, 321 for OBC, 624 for SC, and 2203 for ST category students.

Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) had opening ranks of 49 for General, 209 for OBC, 1076 for SC, and 5519 for ST.

Understanding Closing Ranks

The closing rank is more important for most students. This tells you the last rank that got admission in a particular college and category.

AIIMS Delhi had a closing rank of 48 for General category, 207 for OBC, 644 for SC, and 1405 for ST in the previous year.

MAMC Delhi closed at rank 103 for General, 381 for OBC, 5218 for SC, and 5543 for ST.

VMMC closed at 132 for General, 232 for OBC, 2934 for SC, and 7556 for ST.

The closing ranks give you a realistic picture. If your rank is better than the closing rank, you have good chances of admission.

AIIMS Colleges: What to Expect

AIIMS institutes across India are the most sought after. After AIIMS Delhi, other AIIMS colleges also maintain high standards.

AIIMS Jodhpur had a closing rank of 392 for General category, 766 for OBC, 6920 for SC, and 7835 for ST.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar closed at 785 for General, 1481 for OBC, 6034 for SC, and 23884 for ST.

AIIMS Rishikesh showed closing ranks of 816 for General, 1104 for OBC, 8240 for SC, and 33497 for ST.

Even newer AIIMS like AIIMS Mangalagiri and AIIMS Raipur had competitive cutoffs with closing ranks well under 2000 for General category.

Other Top Government Colleges

Beyond AIIMS and MAMC, several government colleges offer excellent medical education.

Government Medical College Chandigarh (GMCH) had a closing rank of 690 for General, though it went up to 11273 for OBC due to state specific factors.

Madras Medical College Chennai closed at 1296 for General, 1324 for OBC, 6518 for SC, and 52428 for ST.

BJ Medical College Ahmedabad showed closing ranks of 889 for General, 12234 for OBC, 16367 for SC, and 73018 for ST.

University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS), Delhi had closing ranks of 559 for General, 2106 for OBC, 13670 for SC, and 14605 for ST.

How Marks Convert to Ranks

Understanding the relationship between marks and ranks helps you predict your position.

Scores between 650 and 720 typically result in ranks between 1 and 10,000. This range almost guarantees admission to top government colleges.

Marks between 620 and 650 usually mean ranks between 10,000 and 20,000. You still have excellent chances at government colleges.

Scores of 600 to 620 place you in the 20,000 to 30,000 rank range, which is competitive for many government colleges.

Between 550 and 600 marks, ranks typically fall in the 30,000 to 60,000 range. State quota becomes important here.

Category-Wise Expectations

Your category significantly impacts your admission chances. For General and EWS category students, a safe score through All India Quota is between 610 and 640. Through state quota, aim for 590 to 620.

OBC candidates should target 580 to 610 for All India Quota and 550 to 590 for state quota admissions.

SC and ST candidates have more relaxed requirements with safe scores of 490 to 520 for All India Quota and 450 to 490 for state quota.

For PwD candidates across categories, scores between 410 and 490 are considered safe depending on the quota.

What Determines These Cutoffs?

Several factors decide the cutoff each year. The difficulty level of the question paper plays a big role. A tougher paper means lower cutoffs.

The number of students appearing for the exam matters. More candidates usually mean higher competition and cutoffs.

How students perform overall affects cutoffs. If most students score well, cutoffs rise.

The number of available seats is another factor. More seats can lower cutoffs slightly.

Reservation policies also impact category-wise cutoffs significantly.

The Admission Process

After NEET results, the admission process begins. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts counselling for 15% All India Quota seats in government colleges.

State authorities handle counselling for the remaining 85% seats through state quota. You need to register separately for both.

During counselling, you fill your college preferences. Seat allotment happens based on your rank, category, and choices.

The process typically runs in multiple rounds. If you do not get a seat in round 1, you have chances in subsequent rounds.

Making Smart Choices

Knowing cutoffs helps you make informed decisions during counselling. Do not just chase top ranked colleges. Consider factors like location, hostel facilities, and clinical exposure.

Fill as many choices as possible during counselling. This increases your chances of getting a seat.

Understand the difference between All India Quota and state quota. Your home state might offer better options through state quota.

Keep backup options ready. If government colleges seem out of reach, research good private colleges too.

Remember that these cutoffs are based on previous year data. Actual cutoffs for 2026 might vary based on this year's exam performance and other factors.

Using This Information

Use these cutoff ranks as a guideline, not an absolute rule. If your rank is close to the closing rank, you still have a chance, especially in later counselling rounds.

Check the official counselling websites regularly for updated information. Cutoffs for 2026 will be finalized only after counselling concludes.

Stay prepared with all your documents. The time between seat allotment and reporting is usually short.

Keep track of important dates for counselling registration, choice filling, and seat allotment results.

Your NEET rank determines which doors open for you. Understanding cutoff trends helps you walk through the right ones. Good luck with your admissions.
