At 18 years and 346 days old, Nathan Thomas stepped into a college classroom and into the record books. The engineering teacher from Florida became the world’s youngest male professor, according to Guinness World Records.
Thomas began teaching at Miami Dade College in August 2023. His first course was COP 2270: C for Engineers, a subject that covers programming and computing for engineering students. Some of the students in his class were close to his age, but Thomas did not see that as a problem.
A record that stood for 306 years
Before Thomas, the record belonged to Colin Maclaurin. The Scottish mathematician became a professor at the age of 19, setting the record more than 300 years ago.
Thomas broke that mark before reaching his 19th birthday. His achievement also placed him 16 days ahead of Alia Sabur, who became the world’s youngest female professor at 18 years and 362 days in 2008.
These records show that academic careers do not always follow the usual timetable. Many students finish school, attend university and then enter teaching years later. Thomas began that path while many people his age were still deciding what to study.
He started college at 10
Thomas’ academic journey began early. He started dual enrolment at Miami Dade College when he was just 10 years old. Dual enrolment lets school students take college courses and earn credits before they graduate.
At 14, he transferred to Florida International University. Over the next four years, he completed both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in electrical engineering with honours.
That is a lot of study before turning 19. Most people are still trying to remember where they left their school timetable at that age.
Thomas grew up in a family of engineers. He said mathematics came naturally to him, and his mother helped him see difficult ideas in a simple way. That early support shaped the way he now teaches his own students.
Teaching students close to his age
Walking into a classroom as a teenager could make anyone feel nervous. Thomas, however, said age becomes less important once the lesson begins. Everyone in the room has the same goal: to learn.
