IIT Roorkee is conducting JEE Advanced 2026 this year. The institute has published complete eligibility details on the official website jeeadv.ac.in. These aren't just formalities. Each criterion is mandatory, and missing even one will disqualify you from appearing for the exam.

Condition 1: Your JEE Main 2026 Performance Matters

You cannot just pass JEE Main 2026. You need to be among the top 2,50,000 candidates nationwide to qualify for JEE Advanced. This list follows reservation policies:

General category: 1,01,250 students (40.5%), including 5,063 from General PwD quota
General EWS: 25,000 students (10%), including EWS PwD candidates
OBC NCL: 67,500 students (27%), including OBC NCL PwD candidates
SC category: 37,500 students (15%), including SC PwD candidates
ST category: 18,750 students (7.5%), including ST PwD candidates

Here's an interesting point. If multiple students tie at the cutoff rank, the total number of qualified candidates might exceed 2,50,000. IIT Roorkee has clarified this scenario in the official guidelines.

Condition 2: Age Limit You Cannot Ignore

For JEE Advanced 2026, you must be born on or after 1 October 2001. This is non-negotiable for general category students.

However, SC, ST, and PwD category candidates get a five-year relaxation. Their upper age limit extends to 1 October 1996.

Check your birth certificate right now if you're cutting it close. This requirement has eliminated many deserving candidates in the past simply because they didn't verify their eligibility beforehand.

Condition 3: Limited Attempts at JEE Advanced

You get exactly two attempts at JEE Advanced. Not three, not four. Just two.

And these attempts must be in consecutive years. You cannot take a gap year and return to attempt the exam later. This makes your preparation strategy crucial. Many students waste their first attempt without proper preparation, leaving them with just one real shot at their IIT dream.

Plan your attempts wisely. If you're not ready, it might be better to wait and give your best shot when you are fully prepared.

Condition 4: Your Class 12 Board Exam Timeline

This condition connects your board exams directly to JEE Advanced eligibility. You must have appeared for your Class 12 board examination for the first time in either 2025 or 2026. Your compulsory subjects must include Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

The word 'appeared' here means the board has declared results for that year, regardless of whether the exam was conducted or not. Even if your result was withheld, you're still considered to have appeared.

There's a special provision though. If your board declared results for the 2023-24 academic session on or after 18 June 2024, and you appeared in 2024, you can still appear for JEE Advanced 2026. But you must fulfill all other eligibility conditions.

This essentially means you cannot appear for JEE Advanced three or four years after completing your Class 12. The window is tight.

Condition 5: No Previous IIT Admission

This is where many students get confused. If you have previously taken admission to any IIT course listed in JoSAA Business Rules 2025, you cannot appear for JEE Advanced again. Period.

It doesn't matter if you completed the course or dropped out. It doesn't matter if you accepted the seat online or at a reporting center. Even if your admission was cancelled for any reason, you're still ineligible.

However, there are exceptions. If you took admission to a preparatory course at any IIT in 2025 for the first time, you remain eligible for JEE Advanced 2026.

Similarly, if you were allotted an IIT seat through JoSAA 2025 but didn't report, or withdrew before the last round of seat allotment, or cancelled your seat before the final round, you can still appear for JEE Advanced 2026.

These exceptions provide a safety net for students who realized an IIT seat wasn't right for them or who want to improve their rank for a better branch or campus.

Why These Conditions Exist

These eligibility criteria aren't arbitrary rules designed to trouble students. They serve specific purposes.
