IIT Patna Expansion: New Campus Facilities, Student Capacity and Research Plans
IIT Patna’s third phase will add campus space, hostels, an AI centre and a research park, with student capacity expected to cross 6,000 by 2028.

IIT Patna is preparing for a major campus expansion. The institute plans to complete its third construction phase by 2028. Once the work ends, the campus could support more than 6,000 students, along with a larger faculty and staff base.
At present, 4,347 students study at IIT Patna across undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes. The new buildings will add space for classrooms, research, hostels and other campus services. For students, this means more room to learn, work and take part in research projects.
Third phase will cost Rs 644 crore
The third phase began in 2026 at the institute’s 500-acre campus. It will cover 1,26,462 square metres of built-up area and has an estimated cost of Rs 644 crore. The work is planned for completion in 2028.
After the third phase, the total built-up area at IIT Patna will reach 3,77,306 square metres. This larger campus will help the institute increase its student intake and add more teaching and support staff.
The expansion follows two earlier phases. The first phase began in 2011 and ended in 2016. It created 1,43,616 square metres of space at a cost of Rs 388 crore. The second phase ran from 2017 to 2024 and added 1,07,228 square metres. It cost Rs 498 crore.
Student capacity may cross 6,000
IIT Patna expects its student strength to rise above 6,000 by 2028. This will include learners from regular programmes and hybrid mode courses. The increase will place greater demand on hostels, laboratories, classrooms and student services.
To meet part of this need, the institute has already completed a hostel with more than 700 beds for hybrid mode students. IIT Patna built this facility using its internal resources. A campus hostel may not sound like the most thrilling headline, but for students, a safe bed near the classroom can make a big difference.
AI centre and research park planned
The expansion also focuses on research and innovation. With support from the Bihar government, IIT Patna is developing an artificial intelligence centre at a cost of Rs 60 crore. The centre can support work in AI, data systems, automation and other areas linked to new technology.
A research park is also being built with an investment of Rs 305 crore. An additional Rs 75 crore has been set aside for its maintenance for five years. Research parks often connect institutes with companies, researchers and new businesses. This can help turn academic work into useful products and services.
The planned facilities may give students and faculty more access to advanced labs, industry projects and research partnerships. They can also support work on issues linked to Bihar and eastern India, such as agriculture, health, transport and public services.
Startup hostel to support new businesses
IIT Patna is building another hostel linked to its incubation centre. The project will cost Rs 39 crore. It will offer a place for startup founders and teams to stay while they develop their projects on campus.
This setup can save time for young entrepreneurs. Instead of travelling between a home, office and institute, startup teams can work close to mentors, labs and other support facilities. It may also help students explore business ideas while they continue their studies.
How IIT Patna plans to manage the cost
According to registrar Professor AK Thakur, IIT Patna must return Rs 160 crore from the third phase allocation over 10 years. This means the institute will need to pay Rs 16 crore each year.
The institute expects to earn about Rs 170 crore over the next two years through fees from regular and hybrid mode students, along with income from other resources. IIT Patna plans to use this internal income for future construction and campus development.
This financial plan will become important as the institute takes on more buildings, equipment and services. A larger campus needs more than bricks and classrooms. It also needs funds for power, repairs, laboratories, staff, security and daily student needs.
