Bihar Removes Fail From Class 10 and 12 Marksheets
Bihar will replace “Fail” on Class 10 and 12 marksheets with a skill-based term, while adding support classes, No Bag Days and a women’s university plan.

Patna: Bihar has announced a major change in the way Class 10 and Class 12 board results will appear on marksheets. Students who do not clear the required marks will no longer see the word “Fail” on their certificates, according to the state education department.
Instead, the marksheet will use the phrase “Kaushal ke liye patra”, which means “eligible for skills”. The state says the change aims to protect student confidence and show that one exam does not define a learner’s full ability.
Why Bihar is changing the wording
Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari announced the proposal during a review meeting. He said low marks may show that a student needs more support, but they do not fully measure the student’s talent or future potential.
The word “Fail” can leave a strong mark on young minds. It may also affect how families, schools and society view a student. By using a different term, the government wants to reduce the stigma linked to exam results and encourage students to keep learning.
In simple terms, the new wording does not mean that exam rules will disappear. Students will still need to meet the required marks to pass. The change focuses on how the result is recorded and presented.
New guidelines for board marksheets
The Bihar School Examination Board, or BSEB, is expected to issue detailed guidelines after changes are made to the existing rules. These guidelines will explain how the new phrase will appear on marksheets and other official documents.
Schools, students and parents will need clear information on a few points. These include whether the phrase will apply to all subjects, how it will affect admission to higher classes, and how students can use supplementary exams to improve their results.
Students should wait for the formal BSEB notice before making decisions based on the announcement. Board rules can include small details, and those details matter when a certificate is used for college admission or a job application.
Special classes for supplementary exam students
Bihar also plans to hold special classes for students who will appear for the matriculation supplementary examination. The classes will run for about one month.
These sessions will give students extra time to revise key topics, clear doubts and practise questions. Teachers can also use the classes to find learning gaps and offer support in subjects where students face trouble.
This approach may help students prepare with less pressure. A failed paper can feel like a locked door, but a supplementary exam gives students another key. The quality of teaching, attendance and study material will play a major role in making these classes useful.
Saturday to become a “No Bag Day”
Bihar is also changing the weekly school schedule in government schools. From Monday to Friday, schools will run from 9:30 am to 4 pm. On Saturday, classes will continue from 9:30 am to 1 pm.
For students from Classes 1 to 8, the Saturday programme will include lessons and other activities until noon. Lunch will be served from 12 pm to 12:40 pm, after which students will return home. Secondary and higher secondary schools will continue teaching and scheduled activities until 1 pm.
Students will not need to carry school bags on Saturday. The plan is to use the day for drama, music, art and other creative activities. The government also plans to appoint teachers with skills in arts and music.
How teachers will use the extra time
After student activities end, teachers will spend another hour on school work. This may include preparing lesson plans, checking homework, updating teacher diaries and reviewing student progress.
Teachers may also manage laboratories and hold remedial classes for students who need more help. These tasks can support regular teaching, but schools will need enough staff and proper planning to avoid adding too much work to teachers.
Women’s university planned in Bihar
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has also announced plans for a university meant only for women. The proposed institution is expected to have women as students, teachers, the vice-chancellor and other staff members.
The government says the university will help women gain confidence and access higher education in a focused learning setting. More details, such as the location, courses, admission rules and opening date, are yet to be shared.
Together, these steps point to a wider change in Bihar’s education plans. The focus is moving towards student support, skill development, creative learning and new opportunities for women. The next stage will depend on the official BSEB guidelines and how schools put each measure into practice.
