Best Free Study Material for RBI Grade B: Notes, PDFs and Resources

The first thing to settle before hunting for study material is understanding the RBI Grade B syllabus properly. Most candidates collect resources before they know exactly what is tested. They end up with 40 PDFs they never open and no clear plan.

The syllabus has three sections in Phase 2:

• Economic and Social Issues (ESI)

• English Writing Skills

• Finance and Management (F&M)

Your material list should be built around these three, not Phase 1. Phase 1 has General Awareness, English, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning. These are standard and can be covered with free resources without difficulty. Phase 2 is where preparation gets harder and where your source selection matters much more.

RBI Grade B Previous Year Papers

Free Phase 1 and Phase 2 RBI Grade B Previous Year Paper are available on several exam preparation platforms without payment.

Solve at least 3 to 4 previous year papers from both Phase 1 and Phase 2. This gives a realistic sense of the difficulty level, question framing, and time required per section.

Official RBI Publications

This is where most candidates do not start but should. RBI publishes several reports directly relevant to the ESI paper. All of them are available free on RBI's official website. No login, no paywall.

The five most important ones:

• RBI Annual Report: Covers the bank's operations, monetary policy decisions, and assessment of the Indian economy for the year. Directly feeds ESI questions.

• Monetary Policy Report: Published twice a year. Covers inflation analysis, growth projections, and interest rate rationale. Phase 2 questions on monetary policy are often based on recent MPR editions.

• Financial Stability Report: Published twice a year. Covers risks to the banking system, asset quality trends, and financial sector stability. Questions on NPA trends in Phase 2 map closely to FSR content.

• Report on Trend and Progress of Banking in India: Annual document. One of the most tested sources in the ESI paper. Covers banking sector data, regulatory developments, and financial inclusion progress.

• Report on Currency and Finance: Focuses on a different structural theme each year. The 2023-24 edition covered India's digital revolution. These thematic reports often influence essay topics in the English Writing Skills paper.

These five together cover a large portion of ESI. They are primary sources. Coaching notes summarising them are secondary. The difference shows in descriptive answers.

Economic Survey and Union Budget

• The Economic Survey is released by the Ministry of Finance before the Union Budget. It covers GDP growth, inflation, employment, fiscal situation, and sector-wise economic performance. Free on the Ministry of Finance's official website.

• The Union Budget documents are also free on the same portal. The budget statement and economic analysis are useful for both General Awareness in Phase 1 and ESI in Phase 2.

Free Resources for Phase 1

General Awareness

• The RBI Bulletin is published monthly on RBI's official website. Reading the current affairs and policy updates section each month builds both GA and ESI preparation at the same time.

• PIB (Press Information Bureau) is free and reliable. Scheme launches, policy announcements, and budget scheme details are all on their official website.

• The Hindu and Financial Express for daily newspaper reading.

Quantitative Aptitude

• R.S. Agarwal's Quantitative Aptitude is the standard reference. Free PDF versions circulate widely.

• Data Interpretation dominates the QA section. Practice DI sets daily.

Reasoning

• Standard banking exam PDFs for seating arrangement, puzzles, and syllogisms are widely available on exam preparation platforms without payment.

English

• Reading good newspapers daily is enough for Phase 1 English. Phase 2 English is different and needs separate preparation.

Free Resources for ESI

Beyond RBI publications:

• NCERT Economics (Class 11 and 12): Covers macro and microeconomics basics. If your economics background is weak, start here. Free on NCERT's official website.

• ChatGPT: Genuinely useful for concept clarity. Ask it to explain fiscal deficit, monetary transmission, or balance of payments in simple terms. Use it as a doubt-solving tool, not as a source for facts.

• YouTube: Several channels cover ESI topics in detail for free. Good for understanding complex economic concepts before reading the primary sources.

Free Resources for F&M

The F&M paper has two parts.

Management Topics

The Management section is much bigger than most candidates expect. It has four broad areas:

• Fundamentals of Management and Organisational Behaviour

• Ethics at the Workplace and Corporate Governance

• Communication

Free summaries of all these are widely available. Standard management textbooks cover them in detail. YouTube explanations also work well here.

Finance Topics

• SEBI's official website has free circulars, annual reports, and regulatory documents. Reading SEBI circulars builds familiarity with capital market regulations at no cost.

• RBI's official website also has regulatory guidelines on banking, NBFCs, and payment systems that are directly relevant to the finance section.

What Not to Download

• Avoid random PDF collections shared in WhatsApp groups or Telegram channels without a clear source. Most are outdated, poorly formatted, or factually incorrect.

• Do not over-rely on ChatGPT for factual content. It can hallucinate data, especially economic statistics. Use it for concepts, not for numbers.

The RBI Grade B exam tests accuracy of knowledge more than quantity. Ten reliable sources studied properly will do more than forty random PDFs stored in a folder you never open.
