AC Team

If you sat for the UGC NET June 2026 exam, you are probably refreshing the NTA website every few hours right now. Fair enough. The exam wrapped up on July 5, and candidates are still waiting for the provisional answer key. The National Testing Agency has not given an exact date yet, but it should land soon on ugcnet.nta.nic.in.
Here is everything you need to know about the answer key, how to download it, and what to do if you spot a wrong answer.
What Is the Provisional Answer Key?
The provisional answer key lists the correct option for every question asked in the exam, across all 87 subjects. NTA releases this before the final key so candidates get a chance to flag any mistakes. Once the objection window closes, subject experts review every claim, and NTA publishes the final answer key. The result follows soon after.
Think of it as a rough draft. NTA shows its work first, then locks it in once everyone has had a say.
How to Download the UGC NET Answer Key 2026
Once released, here is how you can check your answer key:
- Go to ugcnet.nta.nic.in
- Click on the answer key link for the exam
- Log in using your application number and password, or application number and date of birth
- Enter the security pin shown on the screen
- Click Sign In
- Download the answer key, response sheet, and question paper
No extra fee applies here. Downloading the key is free, so ignore any site or link asking you to pay for it.
What Details Will the Answer Key Show?
Each answer key carries a few standard details:
- Exam date and shift
- Subject name and code
- Question ID
- Correct option ID
Match these against your response sheet, and you can calculate your probable score before the official result drops.
How Marks Are Calculated
The UGC NET marking scheme keeps things simple:
| Answer Type | Marks |
|---|---|
| Correct answer | +2 |
| Incorrect answer | 0 |
| Unattempted question | 0 |
There is no negative marking, so guessing will not hurt your score. Count your correct matches, multiply by two, and you get your provisional total.
How to Challenge the Answer Key
Spotted an error? You can raise an objection during the challenge window. Here is the process:
- Visit ugcnet.nta.nic.in
- Click the answer key link
- Log in with your credentials
- Click on Challenge Answer Key
- Select the correct option ID for the question you are challenging
- Click Save Your Claims
- Upload supporting documents as a single PDF
- Click Save Your Claims & Pay Fee
- Pay INR 200 per question online through debit card, credit card, net banking, or UPI
Keep the payment receipt. You may need it later if there is any dispute. Also remember, NTA only accepts challenges against the provisional key. Once the final key is out, that door closes for good.
Understanding the Normalisation Process
UGC NET runs across multiple sessions, so NTA uses a normalisation process to keep things fair. Scores from different sessions get compared, and percentile scores are then used to normalise everyone's marks. This percentile decides whether you qualify for JRF or the Assistant Professor role, not just your raw score.
Cutoff Marks and What Comes Next
Along with the result, NTA releases category-wise, paper-wise, and subject-wise cutoff marks for all 87 subjects. These cutoffs vary for JRF and Assistant Professor posts, so check the one relevant to your goal.
Clearing UGC NET opens up a fair number of paths. You could pursue a PhD, apply for JRF, step into a lectureship, or explore research roles at places like ICAR, DRDO, or ICMR. Some candidates even go on to set up their own labs later. So this answer key is not just a checklist, it is a small but important step toward all that.
Until the official release, keep your application number and date of birth handy, and check the NTA site regularly. We will keep this space updated as soon as NTA makes a move.
