Paper 2 Syllabus

Paper 2 is for the subject that you have chosen. The syllabus is representative of current academic and research trends. Preparing for UGC NET 2026

Where to Begin

Start with the syllabus, not the study materials. Download Paper 1 & Paper 2 Syllabus PDF. Chart out topics you already know well vs topics that need work. That gap analysis, more than anything else, drives your study plan.

Study Plan Overview

You have about 39 days until June 22. Divide this into 3 phases; 13 days of concept building (core topics + basics), 13 days of practice with PYQs and mocks (speed + accuracy), and the last 13 days of full revision with daily UGC NET mock tests and analysis. The emphasis changes from learning to testing.

Tips for Time Management

Paper 1: 50 questions in about 60 minutes (within the combined 3 hour window). You get about 72 seconds per question. Remaining time, Paper 2, 100 questions. Practice with a timer from the beginning creates the right habits.

Revision Approach

Revise in short cycles – cover a topic, test yourself, check gaps, move on. Re-reading is passive, a waste of time. Active recall with practice questions locks information in faster.

Mistakes You Should Avoid

The most common error is skipping Paper 1. Most candidates consider it secondary, but it has 100 marks. Another is to ignore previous year patterns; question types repeat more than candidates expect.

UGC NET Best Books 2026

Paper 1

Search for books that cover the complete syllabus of Paper 1, i.e., Teaching Aptitude, Research Aptitude, Communication, Reasoning, ICT, Environment, Higher Education, etc. Oswaal UGC NET books for Paper 1 are very famous among the aspirants.

Paper 2 Subject Wise

Select books that are subject specific and cover the revised 2026 syllabus. Before purchasing, please cross verify the table of contents with the official UGC NET 2026 syllabus PDF.

Previous Year Questions and Mock Tests

Oswaal Books offers chapter-wise previous year questions along with topic summaries, which is great for UGC NET 2026 exam pattern understanding and revision. Solving previous year question papers will give you an idea about the question patterns, important topics and difficulty level. Attempt at least 5 full length mock papers before the exam.

Cut Offs & Qualifying Marks | What to Expect

Qualifying marks are only minimum eligibility marks, and just securing the same does not ensure selection. Candidates have to still qualify in the subject-wise cut off marks.

Generally, the minimum qualifying marks for Assistant Professor category-wise are approximately 40% for General and EWS candidates with relaxations for SC, ST, OBC, and PwD categories. Please check the official notification for the correct numbers.

Admission Card & Exam Day Instructions

Download the Admit Card

Visit the NTA official website. Click on the link for the admit card. Enter your registration number and password. Download the admit card. Carry a printed copy of it on the day of the exam with a valid photo ID like Aadhaar or Voter ID.

Directions for Exam Day

The CBT works in two shifts per day. Check the shift timings, reporting time, and exam centre on your admit card closely – strict adherence to the schedule will save you from disqualification. No negative marking, so worth a try for all questions.

Result and Certificate

How to View Results

After the exam, the NTA declares the result on the official website. Enter your application number and password to see your scores.

Validity of Certificates

NET certificate for Assistant Professor is valid for lifetime. The JRF award letter is valid for 3 years from the date of issue – candidates need to enrol for a PhD programme within this period to avail the fellowship benefits.

Conclusion

The test is about consistency, not intensity. The difference between the qualified and unqualified candidates is a few things:

Paper 1 is a serious thing. It’s not a small number of marks, 100. The majority of candidates overprepare for Paper 2 and underprepare for Paper 1 – this is where marks are lost.

Use past year questions as a diagnostic tool, not just a revision exercise. Understand why the wrong options are wrong.

Practice tests in real conditions. No phone, no breaks, tight on time.

Refer to the official notification PDF. Syllabus, subject codes, and exam rules are subject to change. What is true in 2024 may not be true in 2026.

The deadline for applying is 20 May 2026. If you still have not registered, go to ugcnet.nta.nic.in and start from there.
