UGC NET 2026 Answer Key: Release Date, Download Steps and Marking Scheme

If you sat for the UGC NET 2026 exam, you are probably refreshing your browser every hour waiting for the answer key. We get it. That waiting game is the worst part of any exam. Here is everything we know so far about the UGC NET 2026 Answer Key, straight from the National Testing Agency (NTA).

What is happening with the answer key?

The NTA will release the UGC NET 2026 Answer Key on its official website. Along with the provisional answer key, the agency will also publish the question paper and the recorded responses submitted by each candidate. As of now, NTA has not announced a specific date or time for this release. So keep an eye on the official portal instead of relying on rumours.

Where to check the UGC NET Answer Key

Once NTA makes the announcement, you can download the answer key from https://ugcnet.nta.nic.in/. You will need your application number, password, and the CAPTCHA code to log in and view your provisional answer key.

NTA has made one thing clear: download your response sheet the moment it is available. The agency has stated, "Candidates are advised to download the response sheet for the future. No copy of the response sheet will be provided by NTA after the declaration of results under the RTI Act." So save it, print it, email it to yourself, do whatever you need to do. Just do not lose it.

How to download the UGC NET Answer Key: step by step

  1. Go to the official website at https://ugcnet.nta.nic.in.
  2. Look for the link that says "Download UGC NET Answer Key." You will find it under the Candidate's Activity section.
  3. Click on the link. A PDF document may open directly, or you might need to enter login details like your application number and date of birth or security pin.
  4. Once the answer key opens, save it as a PDF on your device.
  5. Print a copy for your records. Trust us, you will want this later if you plan to raise objections or just want to double check your score.

How marks are awarded: the UGC NET marking scheme

The marking scheme for UGC NET is simple and fair. Here is how it works:

  • Each question carries 2 marks.
  • For every correct answer, you get 2 marks.
  • There is no negative marking for wrong answers.
  • No marks are given for questions left unanswered or marked for review.

Since there is no penalty for wrong answers, always attempt every question. Even a guess has a chance of being right, and there is nothing to lose.

What happens if a question has more than one correct answer?

Sometimes a question turns out to have more than one correct option, or none at all. NTA has a clear policy for such cases:

  • If more than one option is correct, candidates who marked any of the correct options get 2 marks.
  • If all the options given are correct, everyone who attempted the question gets 2 marks.
  • If none of the options are correct, or the question itself is wrong or gets dropped due to a human or technical error, everyone who attempted the question still gets 2 marks.

This policy protects candidates from losing marks due to errors that are not their fault. Fair enough, right?

Why the response sheet matters

Your response sheet is basically a record of exactly what you answered during the exam. Once results are declared, NTA will not provide a copy under the RTI Act. So this is your only chance to keep proof of your answers. Download it, save it in a folder you will actually remember, and keep it until your results and any counselling process are fully done.

What to do once the answer key is out

When the UGC NET 2026 Answer Key finally drops, here is a quick checklist:

  • Download both the answer key and your response sheet immediately.
  • Match your answers against the key to get an idea of your likely score.
  • Check if NTA has opened a window for raising objections, in case you spot any errors in the answer key.
  • Keep printed and digital copies safe until your final result is out.

Until the official date is announced, the best thing you can do is bookmark the official website and check it regularly. We will keep you posted the moment NTA makes a move.
