If you were worried about missing the admission deadline for your child under the Right to Education (RTE) scheme in Bihar, here's some good news. The government has extended the deadline by 10 more days.
The last date to enroll children from economically weaker sections in private schools was 10th March. Now, parents have time till 20th March to complete the admission process. The Director of Primary Education sent letters to all District Education Officers and DPOs on Wednesday confirming this extension.
Why Did the Government Extend the Deadline?
This year, 69,193 students applied for admission under RTE. By 10th March, only 40,626 children got admitted to private schools. That means nearly 40 percent of applicants were still waiting for admission. The extension gives these remaining students a fair chance to secure their seats.
The Education Director also warned schools in the letter. Any school that refuses to admit eligible students will face action. This is a strict message to ensure no child misses out due to school negligence.
How Did the Admission Process Work?
The government started the online application process in January for the 2026-27 academic session. Parents could apply till 15th February. After that, officials verified all applications. On 23rd February, the government allotted schools to students based on their applications.
From 24th February to 10th March, parents could get their children admitted to the allotted schools. But many families could not complete the process in time. Some faced documentation issues. Others struggled with the online portal. The extension helps these families catch up.
What is the Right to Education Act?
The Right to Education Act ensures free education for children from poor families. Under this law, private schools must reserve 25 percent of their seats for students from economically weaker sections. These children pay no fees. The government covers all education costs.
Any family with an annual income below Rs 2 lakh can apply. The scheme covers children from all backward economic groups. It gives them access to quality education in private schools that they might not afford otherwise.
Understanding the Gyandeep Portal
Bihar developed the Gyandeep Portal to manage RTE admissions. Parents complete the entire application process online through this portal. They submit documents, choose preferred schools, and track their application status here.
The portal made the process transparent. Parents can see which schools have seats available. They get updates about their child's admission status. The system also helps officials monitor the entire admission process across the state.
What Should Parents Do Now?
If your child got a school allotment but you haven't completed the admission yet, visit the school before 20th March. Carry all required documents with you. This includes income certificate, address proof, birth certificate, and caste certificate if applicable.
Contact the school administration and inform them about your allotment. If any school refuses admission, note down the details. You can file a complaint with the District Education Officer. The government has made it clear that schools must cooperate.
For parents facing technical issues with the Gyandeep Portal, reach out to the helpline number. District education offices also have staff who can guide you through the process. Don't wait till the last day. Complete the admission as soon as possible.
What Happens After Admission?
Once admitted, your child gets the same facilities as other students. The school cannot discriminate based on the RTE quota. Your child will receive books, uniforms, and mid-day meals as per government schemes.
The government reimburses schools for the fees of RTE students. Schools receive a fixed amount per child from the state. This ensures that schools don't lose money by admitting children under this quota.
Parents should stay in touch with school authorities. Attend parent-teacher meetings. Monitor your child's progress. The RTE scheme opens doors, but consistent effort from both parents and students ensures success.
The ten-day extension is a valuable opportunity. Make sure you use this time well. Thousands of children are waiting for quality education. This scheme can change their future. Don't let paperwork or deadlines come in the way of your child's dreams.
