NIT Electrical Engineering JoSAA Cutoff 2026: Opening and Closing Ranks

If you are chasing a seat in Electrical Engineering at an NIT, you already know that JoSAA counselling can feel like a nail biter. Every round brings new numbers, and those numbers decide whether you pack your bags for Rourkela, Surat, or somewhere else entirely. Let's break down what the NIT EE cutoff looks like for 2026 and what it actually means for you.

What Do Opening and Closing Ranks Mean?

The opening rank is the rank of the first candidate who got a seat in a specific NIT for Electrical Engineering. The closing rank is the rank of the last candidate who made it in during that round. If your JEE Main rank falls between these two numbers, you are in the running for that seat.

These ranks shift after every round. Some seats open up as students float or slide to other options, so a course that looked out of reach in Round 1 might come within your grasp by Round 3.

NIT EE Cutoff: Round 1 vs Round 2

Here is a quick look at how the ranks moved between the first two rounds:

InstituteRound 1 Closing RankRound 2 Closing Rank
NIT Rourkela89568956
Motilal Nehru NIT Allahabad1068210809
Malaviya NIT Jaipur1266512881
NIT Kurukshetra1697517806
NIT Delhi1360915142
NIT Srinagar3762641570
NIT Agartala3336836711

Notice that most closing ranks went up slightly in Round 2. This happens because seats vacated by students moving to their preferred branch or institute get filled by candidates further down the list. NIT Rourkela stayed rock steady, which tells you it remains one of the toughest EE seats to grab among NITs.

Where NIT EE Ranks Usually Land

For General Category students, the NIT EE opening and closing ranks generally sit between 5,000 and 50,000. Institutes like NIT Rourkela and Motilal Nehru NIT Allahabad sit at the lower end, meaning you need a stronger rank to get in. On the other side, NIT Manipur and NIT Mizoram have closing ranks closer to 50,000, giving more students a shot at an EE seat.

This spread matters because it shows you have options at every rank level. A rank of 15,000 might not get you into NIT Rourkela, but it could easily land you a seat at NIT Delhi or NIT Jamshedpur.

Comparing With Last Year's Final Round

Looking at last year's final round cutoffs gives a useful benchmark. NIT Rourkela closed at 10,623 last year compared to 8,956 this year in Round 2 itself, which means competition for EE has only gotten tighter. Malaviya NIT Jaipur closed at 14,665 last year versus 12,881 this year. Most institutes show a similar pattern of ranks tightening, so if you are eyeing a particular NIT, do not wait too long to lock in your choice.

Freeze, Float, or Slide: What Should You Do?

Once JoSAA allots you a seat, you get three choices:

  • Freeze: You accept the seat and stop participating in further rounds. Pick this if you are happy with what you got.
  • Float: You keep the current seat but stay open to a better one in the next round. This works well if your rank is close to the cutoff of a college you prefer more.
  • Slide: You stay within the same institute but hope for a better branch. Choose this if the college feels right but the branch does not.

Think about it like ordering food. Freeze means you are happy with your meal and done. Float means you will keep the plate but peek at the menu for something tastier. Slide means you love the restaurant but want to swap your dish.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Choice filling happens only once, before Round 1 begins. You cannot edit your list once the deadline passes, so take your time and rank your preferences carefully before locking anything in.

Also, remember that JoSAA only covers IITs, NITs, IIITs, IIEST Shibpur, and other government funded technical institutes. If your target is IIIT Delhi, you will need to apply through JAC Delhi instead, since that institute runs its own counselling process.

Keep checking the official JoSAA website as each round result comes out. Cutoffs for Round 3, Round 4, and Round 5 will update as seats move, and tracking these changes closely can help you decide your next move with confidence.
