The National Testing Agency released the NEET UG re-exam result late on Thursday night. Now every aspirant wants to know one thing: which rank will get them a seat in which medical college. Let's break this down in plain terms.
Why Cutoffs May Go Up This Year
Experts believe the cutoff this year will be higher than last year. But there is good news too. The number of MBBS seats has gone up, which means more room for students to get in. Government medical colleges across the country now have 63,296 MBBS seats. This is a big jump from previous years.
The National Medical Commission has not announced the counselling schedule yet. Most experts expect it to come out within a week, so keep checking official notices.
Total Seats This Year
This year, colleges across India will admit students to 1,36,939 MBBS seats in total. That is 9,911 more seats than last year. Government colleges added 2,111 new seats, taking their count from 61,185 to 63,296. Private colleges added 7,800 seats.
Category-Wise Expected Cutoff Ranks
Here is what experts are predicting for the central quota this year, along with last year's closing ranks for comparison:
- General category: Expected cutoff around 30,000. Last year it was 27,360.
- OBC category: Expected cutoff around 29,400. Last year it was 27,421.
- EWS category: Expected cutoff around 33,000. Last year it was 30,921.
- SC category: Expected cutoff around 1,50,000. Last year it was 1,33,123.
These numbers are estimates based on the seat increase and last year's trends. The actual cutoff will depend on how many students appear and how the paper difficulty compares.
What About Bihar?
Bihar's government medical colleges will admit students to 1,710 MBBS seats this year. Under the state quota, here is what aspirants can expect at PMCH:
- General: around 8,500 (last year 8,261)
- EWS: around 7,500 (last year 7,367)
- BC: around 7,000 (last year 6,428)
- EBC: around 9,000 (last year 8,620)
- SC: around 80,000
- ST: around 80,000 (last year 74,474)
- RCG: around 7,500
A New Trend: Toppers From Small Towns
Something interesting is happening with NEET UG toppers. This year, 138 toppers came from 66 different cities across India. That's not a typo. Big coaching hubs no longer hold a monopoly on top ranks.
Officials at the Education Ministry say changes in the exam process have played a role in this shift. The idea behind these changes was simple: reduce the grip that large coaching institutes have on the exam. This year, students from every state and union territory passed in a fairly balanced ratio. Among the top 20 rankers, most students came from states like Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.
This is worth remembering if you're preparing from a small town. Your pin code does not decide your rank anymore.
