NCERT Adds Karnataka Prehistoric Sites to Class 9 History Syllabus
NCERT has added Islampur and Sanganakallu to the Class 9 syllabus, helping students study human evolution, stone tools, archaeology, and Karnataka’s prehistoric heritage.

Students across India will soon learn more about Karnataka’s early human past. The National Council of Educational Research and Training, or NCERT, has added two prehistoric sites from the state to the Class 9 syllabus.
The sites are Islampur in Yadgir district and Sanganakallu in Ballari district. Both will feature in the chapter titled Early Humans and Beginning of Civilisation. The chapter will help students understand how humans evolved, lived, and used tools long before written records began.
Two Karnataka sites enter the classroom
Islampur and Sanganakallu offer important evidence of early human activity in South India. Their inclusion gives students a chance to study archaeology through places from their own country, rather than learning only from sites outside India.
Prehistoric sites can reveal how people lived thousands of years ago. Stone tools, shelters, food remains, and other objects can help researchers study the daily lives of early communities. These objects may look small, but they can answer big questions about human life.
For example, a stone tool can show how people cut food, shaped wood, or hunted animals. It can also offer clues about the skills and choices of the people who made it. There was no user manual for these tools, so each object becomes a piece of a much larger story.
What students will learn
The new section will introduce students to human evolution and the development of early societies. It will also explain the role of stone tools in human history.
Students may explore how early humans adapted to their surroundings, found food, and worked with the materials around them. They will learn that civilisation did not appear in one sudden moment. It grew through many small changes in tools, shelter, social life, and the use of natural resources.
The study of prehistory also shows why evidence matters. Since early humans did not leave books or written notes, archaeologists study objects and layers of soil. They compare findings from different sites to build a picture of the past.
Why Sanganakallu is important
Sanganakallu is located in Ballari district and has a place in the study of prehistoric archaeology in Karnataka. The Robert Bruce Foote Sanganakallu Archaeological Museum in the region houses material linked to the site and the study of early humans.
The museum also has skulls identified as belonging to Homo erectus and Homo sapiens, according to the report. Such displays can help students connect textbook lessons with real archaeological evidence.
A museum visit can make a lesson feel less distant. A picture in a book gives one kind of information. Seeing a tool or skull in a museum can raise new questions: Who used it? How old is it? What did the person eat? What happened to the object before it reached the display case?
A larger role for archaeology in school education
The addition of these sites marks a wider place for archaeology in school learning. Earlier, archaeology often appeared only in short sections of history lessons. The new chapter treats prehistoric archaeology as an important subject in its own right.
This change can help students understand the link between history, science, geography, and anthropology. Archaeologists use many forms of evidence, while scientists study human remains, tools, and the age of objects. Geography also matters because rivers, hills, soil, and climate shape where people can live.
For Karnataka, the syllabus update can bring more attention to local heritage. It may encourage schools to arrange visits, use local examples in lessons, and help students see that history is not limited to forts, kings, and dates. It also lives in rocks, tools, bones, and the ground beneath our feet.
Teachers can use Islampur and Sanganakallu to ask students how early people solved everyday problems. What would they use to cut wood without a metal knife? How would they store food? Which materials near them could become useful tools? These questions can turn a history class into a small investigation.
