JEE Advanced 2026 Expected Cutoff Marks: What Score Do You Need for IIT Admission

The wait is finally over for engineering aspirants. IIT Roorkee conducted the JEE Advanced 2026 exam on 17th May, and students across India are now eager to know one thing: what scores will get them into their dream IIT?

The exam had two papers. Paper 1 ran from 9 AM to 12 PM, while Paper 2 took place between 2:30 PM and 5:30 PM. IIT Roorkee has already released the question papers on their official website. The response sheets will be available on 21st May, and the provisional answer key is expected on 25th May at jeeadv.ac.in.

How Was the JEE Advanced 2026 Paper?

Dr. Sanjay Kumar Kuanar, Dean at Birla Global University's School of Applied Sciences and School of Engineering and Technology, shared his analysis with us. According to him, Paper 2 was harder than Paper 1. The overall difficulty level stayed moderate.

Students who had clear basics and could manage their time well likely performed better. But there's more to the story.

Subject-wise breakdown:

  • Mathematics: This section took the most time in both papers. It demanded strong conceptual understanding.
  • Physics: You needed conceptual clarity and the ability to apply what you learned.
  • Chemistry: This subject was the most balanced of the three.

If you found Maths challenging, you're not alone. Many students struggled with the time pressure in this section.

The Numbers Everyone Wants to Know

Let's talk about the expected cutoff marks. Dr. Kuanar believes the cutoff will be slightly lower than last year, mainly because of the difficulty level in Maths and Physics.

Here's what the expected cutoff looks like for different categories (out of 360 marks):

CategoryExpected Cutoff Marks
General92-100
OBC NCL83-90
SC43-52
ST43-52

Remember, these are estimates based on paper analysis. The actual cutoff will depend on several factors, including the number of students appearing, their performance, and seat availability.

What If Your Score Falls Short?

Here's something important that Dr. Kuanar wants every student to understand. One exam score does not define your capability or your future.

India has many excellent engineering institutions beyond the IITs. NITs, IIITs, state universities, and reputed private engineering colleges offer quality education and successful career paths. Many alumni from these institutions have achieved remarkable success in their fields.

Your worth as a student and future engineer goes far beyond a single test score. Some of the most successful engineers in India did not attend IITs.

What Should You Do Now?

The coming weeks are important. Here's what Dr. Kuanar suggests:

  1. Check your response sheet carefully: When IIT Roorkee releases it on 21st May, review every answer.
  2. Prepare for JoSAA counselling: Understand the process, research colleges, and prepare your preferences.
  3. Keep your options open: Look at all possible colleges, not just IITs.
  4. Make informed decisions: Think about what you want from your engineering education, not just the brand name.

Many students make the mistake of fixating only on IITs. While these are excellent institutions, they are not the only path to a successful engineering career.

Understanding the Timeline

Mark these dates in your calendar:

  • 21st May: Response sheets release
  • 25th May: Provisional answer key expected
  • After answer key: JEE Advanced results
  • Following results: JoSAA counselling begins

Use this time wisely. Research colleges, talk to seniors, and understand different engineering branches. The counselling process can be overwhelming if you're not prepared.

A Word About Perspective

Every year, thousands of talented students take the JEE Advanced. Only a fraction get into IITs. Does that mean the rest are not good enough? Absolutely not.

The exam tests your ability to solve specific types of problems under time pressure. It does not measure your creativity, your dedication, your ability to learn, or your potential to innovate. These qualities matter far more in your actual engineering career.

Think of JEE Advanced as one opportunity among many, not as the only door to success. Some doors might be less famous but lead to equally rewarding destinations.

Whatever your score turns out to be, use it as a stepping stone, not a stumbling block. Your engineering journey is just beginning, and this exam is merely the entrance, not the destination.
