The results for JEE Advanced 2026 are out, and with them comes a clear picture of what it takes to secure a seat at an IIT. IIT Roorkee has released the official results along with the final answer key and cut off marks. The numbers tell an interesting story this year.
If you are wondering what marks you need to qualify for IIT admission, here is the breakdown. General category students need a minimum of 92 marks overall, with at least 8 marks in each subject. For SC and ST category students, the requirement stands at 46 marks overall with 4 marks per subject.
Cut Off Marks Rise Despite Tough Paper
Paper 2 of JEE Advanced, held on 17 May, was considered quite difficult by students and experts. Many expected the cut off to drop compared to previous years. But the opposite happened.
Dr. Sanjay Kumar Kuanar, Dean at Birla Global University, Bhubaneswar, shared his analysis with Navbharat Times. He noted that Mathematics was the most time-consuming section in both sessions and demanded strong conceptual understanding. Physics required clear concepts and application-based knowledge. Chemistry was relatively balanced.
Despite expectations of a lower cut off due to the difficulty level, the marks required for qualification actually increased from last year.
Five Year Cut Off Comparison
The qualifying marks have seen a sharp rise over the past five years. In 2022, general category students needed just 55 marks. This year, that number has jumped to 92 marks. For General-EWS category, the requirement was 50 marks in 2022, which has now increased to 82 marks.
For SC and ST categories, the minimum marks were 28 in 2022, which have risen to 46 in 2026. The trend shows a consistent increase in the qualifying threshold across all categories.
Category Wise Qualifying Marks for 2026
Here is what each category needs to secure IIT admission this year:
- Common Rank List (CRL): 92 marks overall (8 marks per subject)
- OBC-NC: 82 marks overall (7 marks per subject)
- GEN-EWS: 82 marks overall (7 marks per subject)
- SC: 46 marks overall (4 marks per subject)
- ST: 46 marks overall (4 marks per subject)
- PwD categories (all): 46 marks overall (4 marks per subject)
- Preparatory Course: 23 marks overall (2 marks per subject)
In percentage terms, general category students need 7.30% in each subject and 25.56% overall. SC and ST students require 3.65% per subject and 12.78% overall.
How Does IIT Admission Work?
Getting into an IIT is not just about clearing the cut off. Your rank in JEE Advanced determines which IIT and branch you get. The entire admission process happens online through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority).
This centralised system allocates seats based on your merit and preferences. The process has six main steps:
- Register on the JoSAA portal
- Fill your choices of IITs and branches
- Lock your choices
- Wait for seat allotment rounds
- Do online reporting once you get a seat (choose Freeze, Float or Slide)
- Complete document verification and final admission
The system is straightforward. You list your preferred colleges and branches in order. The algorithm then tries to give you the best possible option based on your rank and availability of seats.
JoSAA 2026 Counselling Schedule
IIT Roorkee has released the counselling schedule. Registration starts on 2 June 2026 at 5 PM. The deadline for registration and choice filling is 11 June 2026.
Mock seat allotment lists will be released on 8 June and 10 June. These give you an idea of what seat you might get based on your choices. The actual Round 1 seat allotment results will be announced on 13 June 2026.
Once you get a seat, you can start online reporting, pay fees, and upload documents from 13 June onwards. The last date for fee payment for Round 1 is 26 June 2026.
What If You Don't Make It to IIT?
Not getting into an IIT is not the end of your engineering dreams. Dr. Sanjay Kuanar points out that several prestigious paths exist for engineering education. NITs, IIITs, state universities, and reputed private engineering institutes can all lead to successful careers.
The JoSAA counselling process also covers NITs and other government-funded technical institutes. Your JEE Advanced rank (if you qualify) or JEE Main rank opens doors to many quality institutions.
Key Points to Remember
The cut off marks are minimum qualifying marks. They do not guarantee admission to your preferred IIT or branch. Your actual rank matters more for seat allocation.
You must score the minimum marks in each subject as well as overall. Scoring high in two subjects but low in one can disqualify you even if your total crosses the cut off.
The preparatory course option exists for SC and ST students who score between certain marks. This gives them a year of preparation at an IIT before regular admission.
Keep all your documents ready before counselling starts. You will need them for verification once you get a seat. Any delay or missing document can cost you your allotment.
The mock allotments are useful. They help you understand if your choice filling strategy is working. You can modify your choices based on what the mock results show.
Stay calm during the process. The system is designed to be fair and transparent. Focus on making smart choices rather than worrying about things beyond your control.
