GATE 2027: New Dates, New Syllabus, New Rules Explained

If you are an engineering student dreaming of a master's degree from an IIT or NIT, or a stable job at a top PSU, then pay attention. IIT Madras has just released the official schedule for GATE 2027, and this year comes with some changes that every aspirant needs to know about.

GATE 2027 will be held across six days in February. The exam dates are 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, and 21 February 2027. Just like before, the exam will run in two shifts each day, morning and afternoon. So no, you cannot use the excuse of "wrong time zone" this time.
IIT Madras is conducting this exam under the National Coordination Board-GATE (NCB-GATE), which works under the Ministry of Education. GATE started way back in 1983, and this year marks its 45th edition. Think about that for a second. Your parents might have taken this exam too. Today, it is one of the largest computer based exams in the country, with close to 10 lakh candidates attempting it every year.
Registration and a Tech Upgrade
Online registration is expected to open in mid August 2026. Candidates will be able to fill their forms on the official GATE 2027 portal. But here is the twist this year, applications will now be linked directly to DigiLocker and facial recognition.
What does this mean for you? Faster identity checks at exam centres and almost zero chance of proxy candidates sneaking in. No more "main hi hoon" arguments at the gate. The system is designed to be foolproof, so keep your documents ready and your face camera friendly.
The Syllabus Just Changed, First Time in 5 Years
Here is the part that affects your preparation the most. The syllabus for GATE has been revised after a full five years. IIT Madras has added new, industry relevant topics and removed the ones that no longer matter. If you have been using old notes or last year's books, it is time to check what has changed before you dive back into studying.
Say Hello to Robotics and Automation
With AI, machine learning, and automation taking over every industry, GATE 2027 introduces a brand new paper called Robotics and Automation (RA). This is a clear sign that engineering education is trying to keep up with where the job market is actually heading, not where it used to be.
Another notable change is that Textile Engineering and Fiber Science (TF) is no longer a standalone paper. It now sits as a sectional paper under Engineering Sciences (XE). Despite these shifts, students still have a total of 30 test papers to choose from, and you can pick one or two based on the allowed combinations.
Who Can Apply
The eligibility rules remain the same as before. If you have completed or are in your final year of a bachelor's degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, or Arts, you can apply for GATE 2027. There is no minimum or maximum age limit, so age is truly just a number here.
Here is some good news for the younger crowd. Students in their third year of BTech can also sit for this exam. This gives them a real shot at scoring well before they even finish their degree, which can be a solid head start for admissions or job applications later.
What Should You Do Now
With registration opening in a few months, start by reviewing the updated syllabus carefully. Compare it with your current study material and note the additions and deletions. If you are eyeing the new Robotics and Automation paper, start building a foundation in that area early, since resources for a brand new paper will be limited at first.
Also, keep your DigiLocker account active and updated well before the application window opens. The last thing you want is a technical glitch on submission day while everyone else calmly uploads their documents.
