Four-Year BSc Graduates Can Now Apply for Selected MTech Courses
AICTE has cleared a pathway for four-year BSc graduates to apply for selected ME and MTech courses linked to their undergraduate subjects.

Students with a four-year BSc degree may now get a new route to postgraduate technical education. The All India Council for Technical Education, or AICTE, has cleared the way for eligible students to apply for selected ME and MTech programmes.
This change matters to students who complete a four-year BSc (Honours) or BSc (Honours with Research). It can open an option that was often linked only with BE, BTech or MSc qualifications.
What has AICTE allowed?
AICTE has allowed four-year BSc graduates to be considered for some ME and MTech courses. The rule does not give every BSc graduate access to every MTech programme. The student’s undergraduate subject must match the course or remain closely linked to it.
There is another key condition. The institution and the chosen programme must already accept MSc graduates as eligible candidates. In simple terms, a four-year BSc holder may be considered where a student with a related MSc can apply.
For example, a student who studies mathematics, physics or biology in a four-year degree may explore related technical programmes. The exact option will depend on the subject studied, the specialisation and the admission rules of the institution.
Why is the four-year BSc degree important?
The change follows the University Grants Commission rules issued in March 2025. These rules included four-year undergraduate degrees, such as BSc Honours and BSc Honours with Research, among the qualifications that may lead to two-year postgraduate programmes at Level 7.
ME and MTech courses fall within this area of higher education. The move supports the structure of the four-year undergraduate programme and gives science students more choice after graduation.
Earlier, students could face a strange problem. They might complete a four-year BSc degree under the new education framework, yet find that some technical institutions still listed only BE or BTech as an eligible qualification. That made the degree feel like a key that worked at one door but not at the next.
Admission is not open for every MTech specialisation
Students should not read the AICTE decision as direct entry into all MTech courses. Eligibility will depend on the connection between the BSc subject and the MTech specialisation.
A college may check the student’s core subjects, credits, research work and academic record. It may also set entrance test rules or other conditions. Each institution can publish its own admission notice, so students must read the latest brochure before applying.
A four-year BSc in mathematics may support an application to a related programme, while an unrelated specialisation may not qualify. The same applies to students from physics, biology and other science subjects. The course name alone will not decide eligibility. The full subject combination will matter.
Why were students facing confusion?
The main issue was the different use of UGC and AICTE rules. The UGC rules recognised the four-year BSc route for related postgraduate study. However, technical institutions did not apply the provision in the same way.
Some institutions accepted applications from four-year BSc students. Others limited MTech admissions to BE and BTech graduates. Students raised concerns linked to institutions such as Delhi Technological University and Netaji Subhas University of Technology.
This created uncertainty for students who had selected the four-year BSc programme with plans for higher study. They wanted to know if their degree would be accepted by technical institutions after graduation.
What should students check before applying?
- Confirm that the degree is a four-year BSc Honours or BSc Honours with Research programme.
- Check whether the BSc subject matches the ME or MTech specialisation.
- Read the latest eligibility notice on the institution’s official website.
- Check whether the programme accepts applicants with a related MSc degree.
- Review subject, credit, marks and entrance test requirements.
- Ask the admission office for written clarification if the rules are unclear.
Students should also keep their semester records, subject list and research details ready. These documents can help an institution assess whether the undergraduate study matches the chosen technical programme.
What this means for science students
The decision gives four-year BSc students a clearer path towards selected technical postgraduate courses. It may help students who want to move from core science into areas linked to engineering, technology, data, materials or applied research.
Still, the route will depend on academic alignment and institutional rules. Students should compare course requirements instead of relying on general claims that “BSc students can now do MTech”. The real question is more specific: does this BSc degree meet the requirements for this MTech programme?
