Dehradun Schools Closed on August 31 Due to Orange Rain Alert

Dehradun, August 30, 2026: All schools in Dehradun district will remain closed on Monday, August 31, 2026, after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall.

The closure covers government, private and non-government schools. It also applies to other educational institutions that conduct classes from Class 1 to Class 12. All Anganwadi centres in the district will remain closed on the same day.

Why has Dehradun declared a school holiday?

The District Magistrate of Dehradun, who also serves as the Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, issued the order as a safety measure. The decision followed the latest weather forecast and nowcast from IMD Dehradun, along with alerts from the National Disaster Alert Portal.

The forecast warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places across Dehradun district in the next 24 hours. The weather may also bring lightning and intense spells of rain. During such conditions, roads can flood quickly, trees may fall, and travel can become unsafe. Even a short school journey can turn into a difficult trip when the rain decides to show off.

Which schools and centres will remain closed?

The one-day closure applies to the following institutions:

  • Government schools
  • Private schools
  • Non-government schools
  • Other institutions offering Classes 1 to 12
  • Anganwadi centres across Dehradun district

The order includes students from Classes 1 to 12. Parents should note that this is a district-wide order for August 31 and is not limited to schools in the city area.

Officials asked to enforce the order

The Chief Education Officer of Dehradun and the District Programme Officer have been directed to make sure that schools and Anganwadi centres follow the closure order.

The administration has also shared the order with senior police and administrative officials. This includes the Senior Superintendent of Police and Sub-Divisional Magistrates. Their role is to support the implementation of the safety measure across the district.

What should parents and students do?

Parents should avoid sending children to school on August 31, even if a local area sees a short break in the rain. Weather can change fast during an Orange Alert. Lightning and sudden heavy showers may return without much warning.

Families should follow updates from the district administration, the Dehradun district authorities and their schools. They should also check school messages for information about online classes, tests, assignments or any change to the academic schedule. The official order only announces a holiday for one day. It does not state a change to the school calendar beyond August 31.

What does an Orange Alert mean?

An Orange Alert means people should stay prepared for severe weather and take steps to remain safe. Heavy rain can affect roads, traffic, power supply and public movement. People should avoid walking or driving through flooded roads, stay away from open areas during lightning, and keep children indoors during intense rain.

Residents should also watch for local warnings from the authorities. A weather alert does not mean every part of the district will receive the same amount of rain, but it signals that some areas may face dangerous conditions.
