CUET UG 2026: Why Fewer Universities Are Accepting CUET Scores This Year

The Central University Entrance Test (CUET) UG 2026 is set to begin on May 11, 2026. But here's something that might surprise you. The number of universities accepting CUET scores has dropped. This is a big shift from what we saw in 2024.

In 2024, a record 283 universities used CUET scores for undergraduate admissions. That number fell to 239 in 2025. For 2026, it has risen slightly to 241 universities. Still, that's 42 fewer institutions than the 2024 peak.

The Numbers Behind CUET UG 2026

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is preparing the exam datesheet based on student applications. This year, 1,568,763 unique applications were received. The breakdown is interesting.

About 55% of students (869,901 applicants) chose to appear for five subjects. Another 363,071 students (23%) opted for four subjects. Around 293,639 students (18.71%) selected three subjects. Only 31,011 students (1.97%) applied for two subjects, and 11,141 students (0.71%) chose just one subject.

The exam will be computer-based. Each paper lasts one hour with 50 questions. You get 5 marks for each correct answer. But watch out. There's negative marking of 1 mark for wrong answers.

How Many Days Will You Need to Sit for the Exam?

Students will take a maximum of three papers in one day. If you chose five subjects, you'll need to appear for at least two days. The exact schedule depends on your subject combination.

The exam window runs from May 11 to May 19, 2026 (tentative dates). The NTA will conduct the test across approximately 35 shifts. Your admit card will tell you exactly how many days you need to appear.

This is a relief compared to previous years. In earlier CUET exams, students had to take four or five papers in a single day. That schedule was exhausting and affected performance.

Which Universities Are Participating in 2026?

All 49 central universities will accept CUET scores for admissions. Beyond that, 30 state universities, 27 deemed universities, 119 private universities, and 7 other government institutions have signed up.

The list is diverse. You'll find options across different types of institutions. But the total count is still lower than 2024's high point.

Why Are Fewer Universities Using CUET?

Experts point to one main reason: result timing.

In 2025, CUET results came out on July 4. By that time, many students had already taken admission in private and other institutions. They couldn't wait that long to know their scores.

Think about it from a student's perspective. You finish your board exams. You wait for CUET. Then you wait more for results. Meanwhile, other colleges are filling their seats. Some students with good CUET scores end up in different institutions simply because they needed certainty.

Private institutions and state universities often announce their admission schedules earlier. They wrap up their process before CUET results arrive. This timing mismatch pushes students toward alternatives.

Some universities also find the CUET process rigid. They prefer their own entrance tests or merit-based admissions that align better with their academic calendars.

What This Means for You

If you're preparing for CUET UG 2026, don't panic. You still have 241 universities to choose from. That's a solid list with quality institutions across India.

But you should have a backup plan. Apply to universities that don't require CUET scores. Keep your options open. Don't put all your hopes in one basket.

The datesheet will be released soon on the official NTA website. Keep checking for updates. Once it's out, plan your preparation according to your exam dates.

Preparing for Multiple Papers

If you're among the 55% who chose five subjects, your preparation needs to be sharp. You'll face at least two days of testing. That means sustained concentration and stamina.

Practice taking multiple papers in one day. Get used to the pattern. The computer-based format is different from pen and paper. Familiarise yourself with the interface through mock tests.

Remember the negative marking. Don't guess wildly. If you're not sure about an answer, it's better to skip it than lose a mark.

The Bigger Picture

CUET was introduced to create a common platform for university admissions. The idea was simple: one test for multiple universities. It would reduce the burden on students who otherwise had to prepare for different entrance exams.

The concept is sound. But implementation challenges remain. The late result announcement is the biggest hurdle. Until that gets fixed, universities will hesitate to rely solely on CUET.

The slight increase from 239 universities in 2025 to 241 in 2026 shows that the exam still has value. Institutions see merit in a standardised test. But the system needs refinement.

For now, focus on what you can control. Prepare well for your chosen subjects. Keep track of important dates. Apply to multiple universities. And stay flexible with your plans. Your hard work will pay off, regardless of which institution you finally join.
