CSIR NET 2027 Complete Guide: Latest Updates, Eligibility, Coaching Institutes, Test Series & Fellowship
CSIR NET eligibility, fellowship, exam pattern and the Life Science-Biotechnology merger, with IFAS, Career Endeavour, Pathfinder Academy and Let's Talk Academy options.

Hello, future researchers! I'm Runal Naik from AcademyCheck. CSIR NET can open the route to a research fellowship, Assistant Professor eligibility or PhD admission, depending on your qualification and result category. For 2027 preparation, the biggest change concerns Life Sciences: the biological-sciences examination is moving to a joint CSIR-UGC-DBT format.
This guide helps you check your eligibility, understand the paper and choose subject-specific preparation before paying for coaching.
Latest update: Life Sciences and DBT-BET merger
The official CSIR notice introduces the Joint CSIR-UGC-DBT JRF-NET from the December 2026 cycle by merging CSIR-NET Life Sciences and DBT-BET Biotechnology. It provides for optional questions across both areas and says the merger itself will not reduce the total fellowships.
Life Sciences/Biotechnology students: use the updated combined syllabus and choose teaching and mocks that cover its biotechnology components.
Other science subjects: do not interpret this announcement as merging every CSIR paper with DBT-BET.
Schedule: the official 2027 application and examination dates are awaited on the NTA CSIR NET portal.
What does qualifying CSIR NET mean?
Result | Qualification outcome |
|---|---|
Category 1 | JRF, Assistant Professor eligibility and PhD admission, subject to qualification rules |
Category 2 | Assistant Professor eligibility and PhD admission; no JRF |
Category 3 | PhD admission only; no JRF or Assistant Professor eligibility |
The NTA information bulletin explains these outcomes. Qualification is eligibility for the relevant route; it does not by itself appoint you to a teaching post or give you a PhD seat. Compare the UGC NET complete guide if your intended subject belongs to the UGC NET examination instead.
CSIR NET eligibility and age limit
The current CSIR fellowship guidelines provide these starting checks:
Citizenship: the examination is for Indian nationals.
Master's degree: General/EWS candidates need 55%; OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD and third-gender candidates need 50%, without rounding.
Four-year bachelor's degree: the threshold is 75%, with a five-percentage-point relaxation for eligible categories. This route supports JRF/PhD eligibility, not Assistant Professor eligibility on that degree.
Final-year candidates: provisional participation is possible. Complete the qualifying degree within two years of the result for JRF/Assistant Professor eligibility, or one year for the PhD-only route.
JRF age: maximum 30 years on the first day of the month in which the examination concludes. Women, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD and third-gender applicants receive relaxation up to five years.
Assistant Professor/PhD: there is no upper age limit for these routes.
Before applying, match your degree, category certificate and intended outcome to the bulletin. A three-year BSc alone should not be treated as the four-year undergraduate route. If your result is pending, note the completion deadline in your application checklist rather than assuming provisional eligibility is permanent.
Subjects, syllabus and examination pattern
The official CSIR syllabus page covers Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Life Science and Biotechnology, Mathematical Sciences and Physical Science. The preparation baseline is a three-hour, 200-mark computer-based paper: Part A tests aptitude, Part B subject knowledge, and Part C analytical application.
The June 2026 bulletin gives the following attempt limits. Use them to practise question selection; the bulletin for your actual attempt controls the final scheme, especially during the biological-sciences transition.
Subject | Part | Part | Part |
|---|---|---|---|
Chemical | 15 | 35 | 25 |
Earth | 15 | 35 | 25 |
Life | 15 | 35 | 25 |
Maths | 15 | 25 | 20 |
Physical | 15 | 20 | 20 |
These are maximum attempts, not total questions offered. Negative marking varies by subject and part. Mathematical Sciences Part C has no negative marking and requires all correct options for credit. If you exceed a part's limit, only the first permitted number of attempts is evaluated.
How should you interpret CSIR NET cutoffs?
Read the cutoff for your subject, category and outcome together. A minimum qualifying benchmark is not the same as the final selection cutoff. For example, the official June 2026 cutoff lists these unreserved-category percentages:
Subject | JRF | Asst. |
|---|---|---|
Chemical | 62.250% | 56.025% |
Earth | 71.020% | 63.918% |
Life | 66.500% | 59.850% |
Maths | 43.000% | 38.700% |
Physical | 45.875% | 41.288% |
These describe that examination, not predicted 2027 cutoffs. CSIR combines the marks across Parts A, B and C for merit rather than setting an individual cutoff for each part. Build a preparation target with room above the relevant historical cutoff, and review your accuracy alongside the total score.
JRF fellowship: amount and next steps
JRF: the current CSIR stipend is ₹37,000 per month for the first two years.
SRF: ₹42,000 per month after eligible progression and assessment; the upgrade is not automatic.
Contingency: an annual grant of ₹20,000 is available under the scheme's reimbursement rules.
Tenure: JRF and SRF together are limited to five years, subject to continuation rules.
After a JRF result, shortlist suitable research groups, prepare for their selection process and arrange fellowship activation through the host institution. Keep admission, research progress and fellowship paperwork together so that qualifying the exam leads to a practical research plan.
Online coaching options for CSIR NET
Coaching is optional. Choose it when you need a structured syllabus, regular feedback or help with analytical questions. These options have different subject coverage; they are not a ranking of every CSIR science paper. Features below come from the providers' current course disclosures.
IFAS
Useful for: Life Sciences students who want live teaching with recordings and frequent practice.
Course support: its Life Science page describes 500+ hours of live classes, lecture handouts, daily tasks, interactive doubt support and tests.
Faculty: Dr Kailash Choudhary - teaching tenure not specified on the course page - CSIR NET Life Science educator.
Faculty: Dadasaheb Sondge - teaching tenure not specified - Life Science educator.
Selection check: compare a topic lesson with a Part C solution session, and check that the purchased plan covers the combined Life Science/Biotechnology syllabus.
Career Endeavour
Useful for: students looking for Physical, Chemical or Life Sciences preparation with live or recorded options.
Course support: the institute describes topic tests with discussion, practice books and a test series after syllabus completion.
Faculty check: its public faculty page describes a subject-wise team without a named current batch roster or individual tenures. Obtain that roster for your subject before enrolment.
Selection check: compare the daily workload with your college or laboratory schedule, and confirm recording access for missed classes.
Pathfinder Academy
Useful for: Life Science/Biotechnology students wanting a course explicitly organised around the merged syllabus.
Current course: the June 2027 live/recorded programme lists a January 8 start, 4-9 PM classes, PDF notes and doubt sessions. Six- and twelve-month recorded plans list 28 unit tests and five mocks.
Faculty: Pranav Kumar - provider reports university teaching during 2003-2011 - Life Sciences/Biotechnology author and academy director.
Selection check: choose the access period you will actually use. A short recorded plan and a full live course are different purchases.
Let's Talk Academy
Useful for: Life Sciences students who want live/recorded teaching with regular testing and personal doubt support.
Course support: the provider describes notes, previous-year questions, topic practice, weekly tests and full mocks.
Faculty: Suraj Sharma - teaching tenure not specified in the reviewed disclosure - founder and Life Science mentor.
Selection check: ask which biotechnology units and combined-pattern mocks are included in the selected batch, rather than relying on a general Life Science course label.
AcademyCheck view: Pathfinder's explicit merged-course scope is useful for biological-sciences preparation; Career Endeavour offers a broader subject choice. For IFAS and Let's Talk Academy, compare lesson clarity, doubt access and syllabus mapping against your own weak units. Watch a full concept lesson and its worked questions before choosing, rather than judging teaching from a promotional clip.
Choose a test series and use it effectively
Check the subject: a Life Science mock does not substitute for a Physical or Mathematical Sciences paper.
Check the scheme: confirm part-wise attempt limits, penalties and the combined biological-sciences coverage where applicable.
Inspect solutions: choose explanations that show reasoning and why other options fail, not answer keys alone.
Review each test: record concept gaps, calculation mistakes, risky guesses and slow questions. Revise those points before taking another mock.
Use AcademyCheck's CSIR NET mock-test options to shortlist platforms, then compare their current subject-specific plans. For broader course choices, read the CSIR NET online coaching overview; check the selected plan's current syllabus and access period.

Frequently asked questions
1. Is CSIR NET the same as UGC NET?
No. Choose the examination that offers your intended subject. Do not transfer UGC NET's two-paper scheme to CSIR NET's subject paper.
2. Can a four-year graduate qualify for Assistant Professor?
The four-year undergraduate eligibility route covers JRF and PhD admission, not Assistant Professor eligibility on that qualification.
3. Does the DBT-BET merger affect all CSIR subjects?
The announcement concerns biological sciences, combining Life Sciences and Biotechnology. Use the relevant syllabus for your own paper.
4. Is an expensive coaching course necessary?
No. If you can understand the syllabus and previous papers independently, self-study with a suitable test series can be a practical choice. Pay for teaching when it solves a clear learning problem.
5. What should I do after qualifying?
Follow the route printed in your result: research-group applications and fellowship activation for JRF, relevant teaching recruitment for Assistant Professor eligibility, or university selection for PhD admission.
Summary and what to do next
Start with your qualification route and subject, then map the official syllabus to a weekly study plan. Life Science/Biotechnology candidates should prioritise the merged syllabus. Compare coaching through actual classes and support, and use mocks to improve question selection. Best wishes for your preparation and research journey!
