Southland High School Football Rankings: Week 4 Results and Next Games
A review of the latest Southland high school football rankings, key results, unbeaten teams and major games ahead.
The latest Southland high school football rankings bring a mix of dominant wins, close games and big tests ahead. Santa Margarita remains No. 1 after a 34-0 win over Norco, while several teams picked up strong results that could shape the next ranking update.
With league games and major non-league matchups on the way, here is a clear look at all 25 ranked teams, their records and their next games.
Santa Margarita stays perfect at No. 1
Santa Margarita improved to 5-0 with a shutout win over Norco. The Eagles have scored 34 points in each of their last two listed games and will face their biggest test yet on Oct. 2 against No. 5 Mater Dei.
That game could have a major effect on the top of the rankings. Mater Dei fell to 4-1 after an 25-8 loss to Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, so the Monarchs will look to answer against the top-ranked team in the Southland.
Sierra Canyon makes a statement
No. 3 Sierra Canyon beat No. 4 Orange Lutheran, 28-10. The win moved Sierra Canyon to 4-0 and gave the team a clear claim among the Southland’s best. Orange Lutheran dropped to 3-2 and will try to recover against Servite on Oct. 2.
Sierra Canyon’s next game comes against Oxnard Pacifica on Friday. Oxnard Pacifica is also unbeaten at 4-0, which sets up one of the week’s most interesting matchups. Two unbeaten teams entering a game is the sort of problem ranking voters enjoy and coaches do not.
Mission Viejo survives a high-scoring game
No. 7 Mission Viejo beat Pittsburg, 42-35, to move to 3-1. The game produced 77 points and showed that the Diablos can win in a shootout. Their next challenge is Huntington Beach Edison on Oct. 2.
No. 9 Chaminade also stayed unbeaten after edging St. Bonaventure, 27-24. Chaminade is now 5-0 and will meet Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on Oct. 2.
Several teams remain unbeaten
San Clemente did not play this week but remains 4-0 at No. 8. The Tritons will visit Murrieta Valley on Friday.
No. 10 Palos Verdes also kept its perfect 5-0 record after a 34-0 win over Wilmington Banning. The team will face Long Beach Millikan on Oct. 2.
No. 14 Corona del Mar beat La Serna, 30-24, and moved to 5-0. The Sea Kings will visit Villa Park next. No. 25 La Habra completed another unbeaten week with a 36-7 win over Orange Vista. The Highlanders, also 5-0, will travel to Capistrano Valley on Oct. 2.
Close games bring movement in the middle
No. 11 JSerra beat Bishop Amat, 37-28, to improve to 4-1. The Lions now face No. 2 St. John Bosco on Oct. 2. St. John Bosco, 3-1, was scheduled to play Honolulu St. Louis on Saturday.
Yorba Linda lost a tight game to Huntington Beach, 29-25. The Mustangs fell to 4-1 and will visit unbeaten San Clemente on Oct. 2.
No. 16 Crean Lutheran defeated Oakdale, 38-21, and will meet Tustin next. Tustin moved to 4-1 after beating Westlake, 28-21. That result pushed Westlake to 4-1 and gave Tustin a strong win before its Oct. 2 game against Crean Lutheran.
No. 24 Tustin and No. 16 Crean Lutheran will meet in a game that features two teams coming off wins. The scoreboard may need a rest before the players do.
Big wins and tough losses
No. 6 Corona Centennial handled Rancho Cucamonga, 41-7. The Huskies improved to 2-2 and will travel to Concord De La Salle on Sept. 26. Rancho Cucamonga dropped to 2-3 and will play Long Beach Poly on Friday.
No. 18 Carson scored 50 points in a 50-28 win over North Torrance. Carson is now 4-1 and will face Gardena on Oct. 2.
No. 20 Gardena Serra recorded one of the week’s biggest defensive wins, shutting out Oaks Christian, 41-0. The Cavaliers are 3-2 and will host Bishop Amat on Oct. 2.
No. 21 La Serna lost to Corona del Mar by six points and will visit Warren next. No. 22 Westlake will try to bounce back against Rio Mesa after its loss to Tustin.
