From Hubballi to Higher Office
Joshi was born on November 27, 1962, in Karnataka. He finished school in Hubballi and then joined Kadasiddeshwar Arts College, which is affiliated with Karnataka University in Dharwad. He completed his BA in 1983. Karnataka University itself has a solid reputation. Founded in 1949, it has shaped many politicians, civil servants, and public figures over the years.
During his college days, Joshi did not just attend classes and go home. He got involved in public issues and social service, showing an early pull towards community work. That interest in grassroots development stuck with him and later became the foundation of his political career.
Building a Political Career Brick by Brick
Joshi did not walk straight into Parliament. He started at the ground level with the BJP's Dharwad unit, taking on organisational work before stepping onto the bigger stage. His first Lok Sabha win came in 2004 from Dharwad, and he has held onto that seat in every election since. After his 2024 win, he became a five-time MP, a record that speaks to steady, consistent public trust.
Between 2006 and 2013, he served as BJP Karnataka's General Secretary, and then took over as the party's state president. These roles gave him a strong grip on party organisation, something that clearly helped him later in Delhi.
A Growing List of Responsibilities
Joshi joined the Union Cabinet in 2019 as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines. After the 2024 elections, his portfolio grew further. He became Union Cabinet Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and also took charge of New and Renewable Energy. On top of that, he chaired the Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas from 2014 to 2019, adding parliamentary oversight experience to his resume.
Before politics took over his life, Joshi was involved in entrepreneurship and community initiatives. This early exposure to employment generation and local development gives some context to his practical, ground-level approach to public service.
Stepping Into Education
President Droupadi Murmu accepted Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed the education portfolio to Joshi soon after. He will now juggle his existing ministries alongside this new responsibility, which is no small task.
Speaking after taking charge, Joshi said the Prime Minister had placed his trust in him with a significant responsibility. He promised to work with dedication, humility, and honesty to meet the expectations placed on him.
The timing of this appointment matters. The Education Ministry is dealing with the fallout of the NEET controversy and needs to rebuild public confidence in competitive exams. Strengthening the National Testing Agency, pushing forward the National Education Policy, expanding higher education access, and improving school learning outcomes are all on his plate from day one.
