NMMSS Scholarship 2026-27: Eligibility, Benefits and Application Guide

Students who need help to continue school after Class 8 can apply for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme, or NMMSS. The scholarship supports students from families with limited income and helps them stay in school through the secondary stage.

For the academic year 2026-27, both fresh and renewal applications can be submitted through the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in. The last date to apply is August 31, 2026. It is best to submit the form early. Websites can slow down on the last day, and your internet connection may choose that moment to take a holiday.

What is the NMMSS scholarship?

NMMSS is a centrally sponsored scholarship scheme run through the Ministry of Education. It aims to reduce school dropouts after Class 8 by giving financial support to meritorious students from economically weaker families.

Under the scheme, up to one lakh fresh scholarships are offered each year to eligible students studying in Class 9. The scholarship may continue until Class 12 if the student meets the renewal rules. Students in state government schools, government-aided schools and local body schools can apply. Students studying in private schools, Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are not covered under the scheme.

NMMSS scholarship amount

Selected students receive Rs 12,000 per year, which is paid through the Direct Benefit Transfer system. The amount is usually credited to the student’s bank account after the application passes the required checks.

This support can help with school costs such as books, travel, stationery and other study needs. The payment is not a replacement for regular school support, but it can make a real difference to a family budget.

Who can apply for NMMSS 2026-27?

Students should check the rules issued by their state or Union territory before applying. The main conditions usually include:

• The student must be studying in Class 8 in a government, government-aided or local body school for selection to the Class 9 scholarship.
• The student must meet the required marks in the previous class. In many cases, the minimum is 55% in Class 7, with a relaxation of five percentage points for students from SC and ST categories.
• The annual parental income must not exceed Rs 3.5 lakh from all sources.
• The student must qualify through the state or UT selection process, which includes the Mental Ability Test and Scholastic Aptitude Test.
• The student must meet the school and category rules set by the relevant state or UT.

The income limit, marks rule, exam dates and reservation details may be checked during application. Students should read the latest instructions on the National Scholarship Portal and the official education department website of their state.

Fresh and renewal applications

A fresh application is for a student selected for the scholarship for the first time, usually after Class 8. A renewal application is for a student who already receives NMMSS support and wants to continue it in the next class.

Renewal is not automatic. Students must continue to meet the academic and other conditions set under the scheme. They may also need to provide updated school, bank and identity details. Before submitting a renewal form, check that the previous scholarship record appears correctly on the portal.

How to apply on the National Scholarship Portal

1. Open scholarships.gov.in.
2. Complete the One Time Registration or use the required registration option shown on the portal.
3. Log in with the registered details.
4. Select the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme.
5. Enter personal, academic, income, bank and school details.
6. Upload the required documents in the format and size mentioned on the portal.
7. Check every detail before final submission.
8. Submit the form and download the confirmation page.

Documents students may need

The exact list can differ by state and application type. Students may be asked to provide an income certificate, caste certificate where applicable, marksheet, school certificate, Aadhaar details, bank account details and a passport-size photograph.

The bank account should be active and linked as required for scholarship payment. Names and dates of birth should match across the application, school record, identity document and bank record. A small spelling mismatch can create a large headache later.

Important dates and verification

The last date for fresh and renewal applications is August 31, 2026. After submission, the application goes through two verification levels:

• Level 1: Institute nodal officers are expected to complete verification by September 15, 2026.
• Level 2: District nodal officers are expected to complete verification by September 30, 2026.

Submitting the form does not mean the scholarship has been approved. Students should track the application status on the portal and contact their school if the institute verification remains pending.

From the 2026-27 academic year, students may apply for one merit-based scholarship and one or more welfare-based scholarship schemes at the same time. They must meet the rules of each scheme, and the schemes may have separate conditions on receiving more than one benefit.
