NIFT 2026 Counselling Guide: Registration, Documents, Fees, and Seat Allotment Process

The National Institute of Fashion Technology will begin online counselling for UG and PG programmes in June 2026. If you have cleared both stages of the NIFT entrance exam and secured a valid Common Merit Rank, this guide will walk you through the entire counselling process.

When Does NIFT Counselling Start?

NIFT is expected to start the counselling process in the last week of June 2026. The exact dates will be announced on the official portal nift.admissions.nic.in. The institute has already released a pre-intimation notice asking candidates to keep their documents ready for e-counselling.

You need to monitor the official website regularly. The counselling portal can go live anytime in June.

Who Can Register for NIFT Counselling?

Only candidates who have secured a valid Common Merit Rank in the NIFT final result can register for counselling. Your performance in both Stage 1 and Stage 2 determines your final rank.

The final rank cannot be changed or improved after the result declaration. There is no option for revaluation or rechecking.

NIFT Counselling Process Explained

The counselling process is conducted online and follows these steps:

Step 1: Registration and Choice Filling

Log in to the NIFT counselling portal using your credentials. Fill in your preferred academic programmes and campuses in order of priority. You can select multiple options during choice filling.

Step 2: Upload Documents

Upload all required documents in PDF format. Each document must be between 100 KB and 500 KB in size. Make sure the documents are clear and valid.

Step 3: Pay the Seat Acceptance Fee

Pay the registration fee, which is non-refundable. The fee amount will be mentioned in the official counselling notification.

Step 4: Document and Fee Verification

NIFT will verify your uploaded documents and fee payment. This process takes a few days. Check the portal regularly for updates.

Step 5: Receive Allotment Letter

If you are allotted a seat, you can download your allotment letter from the portal. The letter will contain details about your programme, campus, and next steps.

How Many Counselling Rounds Will There Be?

NIFT conducts three to four regular counselling rounds. If seats remain vacant after these rounds, the institute organises a SPOT counselling round.

You can participate in multiple rounds if you are not satisfied with your allotment or if you do not get a seat in earlier rounds.

Documents Required for NIFT Counselling

Keep these documents ready before the counselling begins:

  • NIFT Stage 2 scorecard
  • Class 10 mark sheet and certificate
  • Class 12 mark sheet and certificate
  • Category certificate (if applicable)
  • Domicile certificate (if claiming state quota)
  • Person with Disability certificate (if applicable)
  • Passport size photographs
  • ID proof (Aadhaar card, PAN card, or passport)

All documents should be self-attested and in the prescribed format.

What Determines Seat Allotment?

NIFT allocates seats based on several factors:

  • Your Common Merit Rank
  • Choices filled during registration
  • Your category (General, SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwD)
  • Seat availability in your preferred programmes and campuses
  • Reservation policy

Top-ranked candidates get their first choice if seats are available. Lower-ranked candidates are allotted seats based on remaining availability.

Seat Reservation Policy

NIFT reserves seats for different categories across all programmes:

  • SC: 15%
  • ST: 7.5%
  • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 27%
  • General-EWS: 10%
  • Person with Disability: 5%

Some campuses also have state domicile quotas. For example, NIFT Patna reserves seats for Bihar domicile candidates.

Expected Cutoffs for Top NIFT Campuses

While official cutoffs are released after seat allotment, here are the expected ranks for popular campuses:

NIFT Delhi: General category candidates with ranks between 1 and 150 for B.Des and 1 to 200 for B.FTech have very high chances.

NIFT Mumbai: Expected cutoff ranges from 150 to 400 for B.Des and 200 to 450 for B.FTech.

NIFT Bengaluru: Ranks between 400 and 700 for B.Des offer high chances of admission.

For newer campuses like NIFT Patna, Shillong, and Nava Raipur, the cutoffs are higher, ranging from 1900 to 2500 for B.Des programmes.

Can You Get NIFT Delhi with a 1500 Rank?

A Common Merit Rank of 1500 is decent but may not guarantee admission to top campuses like NIFT Delhi for Fashion Design if you belong to the General category.

However, if you belong to OBC, SC, ST, or EWS categories, your chances improve. You can also explore other specialisations like Knitwear Design, Accessory Design, or Leather Design, which have slightly relaxed cutoffs.

Understanding NIFT Fee Structure

The first-year fee for NIFT UG and PG programmes includes several components:

  • Tuition Fee (Semester 1): Rs. 1,50,000 (non-refundable)
  • Tuition Fee (Semester 2): Rs. 1,50,000 (non-refundable)
  • Library Fee (per year): Rs. 10,000 (non-refundable)
  • Mediclaim and Student Development Fee: Rs. 4,900 (non-refundable)
  • Exam Fee: Rs. 4,900 (non-refundable)

The total first-year fee comes to approximately Rs. 3,19,800. This excludes hostel charges, which vary by campus.

NIFT Programmes and Specialisations

NIFT offers Bachelor's and Master's programmes with various specialisations.

Bachelor of Design (B.Des) specialisations:

  • Fashion Design
  • Fashion Communication
  • Accessory Design
  • Knitwear Design
  • Leather Design
  • Textile Design
  • Fashion Interiors

Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.FTech): Focuses on Apparel Production

Master's Programmes:

  • Master of Design (M.Des)
  • Master of Fashion Management (MFM)
  • Master of Fashion Technology (M.FTech)

NIFT Participating Campuses

NIFT operates 20 campuses across India. The most sought-after campuses include Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata.

Newer campuses include Gandhinagar, Patna, Kangra, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Srinagar, Panchkula, Daman, Varanasi, and Nava Raipur.

Each campus offers different combinations of programmes and specialisations. Check the seat matrix on the official website to understand availability.

What Happens If You Miss the First Round?

If you fail to meet the cutoff in the first round or miss the registration deadline, you can participate in subsequent rounds. NIFT conducts three to four rounds, giving you multiple opportunities.

However, seat availability decreases with each round. Popular programmes and campuses get filled in the first two rounds.

NIFT SPOT Counselling

If seats remain vacant after regular rounds, NIFT organises SPOT counselling. All eligible candidates, including those who were absent in previous rounds, can participate.

Candidates who became ineligible during document verification cannot participate in SPOT counselling.

The registration fee for SPOT counselling is around Rs. 5,000.

Competition and Acceptance Rate

NIFT receives a large number of applications each year. The competition ratio is approximately 1 seat for every 7 applicants. This gives NIFT an acceptance rate of 13% to 15%.

Top campuses like NIFT Delhi have even more intense competition because of their reputation and placement records.

State Domicile Benefits

Certain NIFT campuses reserve seats for candidates with state domicile. For example:

  • NIFT Patna: Bihar domicile
  • NIFT Kangra: Himachal Pradesh domicile
  • NIFT Kannur: Kerala domicile
  • NIFT Shillong: Domicile of North Eastern states

If you have a domicile certificate from these states, your chances of getting a seat in the respective campus improve.

Tips for NIFT Counselling

Here are some practical tips to navigate the counselling process:

Fill choices carefully: Add as many options as possible. Do not limit yourself to only top campuses or popular specialisations.

Keep documents ready: Prepare all documents in advance. Last-minute arrangements often lead to errors.

Check the portal daily: Counselling schedules can change. Stay updated by visiting the official website regularly.

Understand cutoff trends: Review previous year cutoffs to set realistic expectations.

Have a backup plan: If you do not get your preferred campus or programme, be open to alternatives. NIFT offers quality education across all its campuses.

What You Cannot Do During Counselling

You cannot get admission to campuses that you did not list during choice filling. Even if seats are available and you meet the cutoff, the system will not consider unlisted options.

You also cannot change your rank or request revaluation after the final result is declared.

Final Thoughts

NIFT counselling is straightforward if you understand the process and prepare well. Register as soon as the portal opens. Fill your choices wisely. Upload correct documents. Pay fees on time.

Your NIFT journey begins with counselling. Take it seriously but do not stress. Good preparation leads to good outcomes.
