The Announcement
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan made this announcement on Wednesday amid growing protests over the NEET paper leak issue. He said the shift to CBT mode will make the exam process more secure, transparent, and reliable. He also confirmed that investigations into exam irregularities will continue and strict action will follow against anyone found guilty.
What Changes And What Stays The Same
Here is the good news for students who fear big changes right before a major exam: the core structure of NEET UG remains untouched. The exam will still carry 720 marks. Questions will still come from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The syllabus, number of questions, and marking scheme will not change.
The only real shift is how you answer the questions. Instead of a pen and paper, you will now click through options on a screen. Sounds simple, but for lakhs of students used to paper exams, this needs practice.
Get Ready To Practice On Screen
Experts suggest that students start using online mock tests instead of relying only on OMR sheet practice. Speed, accuracy, and comfort with reading questions on a screen will now matter as much as subject knowledge. Think of it as learning to ride a bicycle. You know the destination, but the vehicle has changed.
So if you are planning to appear for NEET UG 2027, start giving computer based mock tests soon. Your eyes and fingers need training too, not just your brain.
Why The Government Took This Step
This decision has not come out of nowhere. NEET UG 2026 was held on 3 May but got cancelled after a paper leak scandal. The exam was later conducted again on 21 June with the help of the army to prevent further leaks. This entire episode sparked protests across the country, including a continuous demonstration at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, where students demanded the resignation of the Education Minister.
More than 20 lakh students had appeared for the exam that year. NEET UG is not a small test. It decides admission to MBBS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, and several other medical courses. Many states also use NEET UG scores for BSc Nursing admissions. With such high stakes, even a small leak can affect the future of lakhs of young aspirants.
CBI Investigation And Government's Promise
Speaking on the irregularities, the Education Minister said the CBI will investigate the matter thoroughly and no one will be spared this time. He pointed out that action was taken previously too, yet the leak happened again even after the Radhakrishnan Committee's recommendations were implemented. This shows how serious and repeated the problem has become, and why the government is now betting on technology to fix it.
PM Modi's Assurance To Youth
During the NDA meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the ongoing protests directly. He assured young aspirants that their future will not be compromised. Speaking at the 'Mangal Milan' meeting with NDA MPs, he shared details of the strict action being taken in the NEET paper leak case. He also urged the central government and all states to work together to build a leak proof exam system.

If you are preparing for NEET UG 2027, this is your sign to add computer based practice to your study routine. The subjects and marks stay the same, so your books and notes are still relevant. What you need to build now is comfort with screens, timing yourself on digital mock tests, and getting used to navigating questions without a paper trail.
