If you are waiting for NEET UG Counselling 2026 to begin, here is some good news. The process just got a lot less exhausting. Union Health Minister JP Nadda reviewed the setup this week and confirmed a set of changes that aim to cut down the running around students usually face during medical admissions.
Let's break down what is actually changing and what it means for you.
One Physical Visit Instead of Many
Remember hearing stories of students traveling across states multiple times just to submit documents or pay fees? That headache is getting smaller this year. NEET UG Counselling 2026 introduces a one-time physical reporting system.
Here is how it works. Once you get your seat allotment, you choose between two options online:
- Freeze: You accept the seat and report physically to the institute once, to verify your documents and pay the fee.
- Float: You stay in the running for a better seat in later rounds. You complete verification online and do not need to visit the institute or pay fees yet. Your provisional admission stays valid while you wait.
The float option works until round three of counselling. After that round, if you still hold a seat, you must report in person to finish the admission process. So the message is simple: one visit, one verification, one fee payment. No repeat trips.
Resigning From a Seat? Do It Online
Changed your mind about a seat you accepted? MCC has added an online resignation facility. Wherever the counselling rules allow it, you can resign through the portal itself. No need to show up at the college campus just to submit a resignation letter, unless the Information Bulletin says otherwise.
More Transparency, Less Guesswork
A few backend changes will also make the process smoother for candidates:
- Your data from NTA will already be filled in on the portal
- Document verification happens online
- The National Medical Commission validates the seat matrix
- Participating institutes carry out their own checks
These steps reduce manual errors and speed things up on the admin side, which usually means fewer delays for students.
Better Support for PwBD Candidates
This is one of the more meaningful updates. The number of disability assessment centres has jumped from 16 to 61 across the country. That is a big deal if you had to travel far just to get assessed earlier.
There is also a new term to know. Under NMC guidelines from July 27, 2026, the certificate from Medical Boards will now be called an Eligibility Certificate. It focuses on functional assessment rather than just labeling a disability, which makes the process more about what you can do, not just what condition you have.
An Appellate Disability Assessment Board has also been set up. So if you disagree with the first assessment, you now have a proper channel to appeal.
NRI Admissions Go Fully Digital
NRI candidates, this one is for you. The entire registration process moves online this year. You upload your documents directly on the portal instead of emailing them, and Document Verification Officers check them digitally.
One thing to keep ready: proof that your sponsor is your legal guardian under the Guardians and Wards Act, 1890. This follows a Supreme Court direction and a public notice MCC issued on May 27, 2026.
Help Is Just a Call Away
Technology glitches happen, especially when thousands of students are on a portal at once. To handle this, a 24x7 toll-free helpline is now active at 1800-102-7637. The Ministry is also rolling out bilingual guides, FAQs, and video tutorials, along with an email grievance system for quick issue resolution.
Nadda has asked officials to keep the portal running smoothly and respond fast to any complaints. Cybersecurity checks have also been done with the National Informatics Centre to keep the system safe during high traffic periods.
What Should You Do Now
NTA declared NEET UG 2026 results on July 16, and counselling for All India Quota seats in MBBS, BDS, and B.Sc. Nursing is set to start soon. Before you make any decisions on freeze, float, or resignation, read the Information Bulletin carefully. Keep checking the official MCC portal for the schedule, and do not wait until the last day to upload your documents. Portals tend to slow down when everyone logs in at once, so give yourself a buffer.
