NEET UG 2026 Tamil Nadu Counselling Rules Remain Unchanged

NEET UG 2026 candidates in Tamil Nadu can follow the existing state counselling process. The Directorate of Medical Education and Research, Tamil Nadu, has clarified that recent changes announced by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) will not change the state quota admission process.

The clarification matters because MCC has introduced new features for counselling under the 15 per cent All India Quota (AIQ). Some students feared that these rules would also apply to Tamil Nadu state quota seats. The Tamil Nadu Selection Committee has now stated that this is not the case.

What Tamil Nadu has clarified

Admissions to MBBS and BDS courses under the Tamil Nadu state quota will continue under the current prospectus and government rules. Candidates do not need to follow the new AIQ process for state quota seats.

The state counselling process will continue to cover key steps such as online registration, document upload, rank-based seat allotment and college reporting. Students should use the official Tamil Nadu NEET UG counselling portal for all applications and updates.

The authorities have also said that any future change to the state counselling policy will be announced before the next admission process begins. This will give students time to read the new rules and prepare their documents.

Why the MCC changes caused confusion

For NEET UG 2026 AIQ counselling, MCC has added features that aim to make seat allotment easier to manage. These include:

• Freeze: A candidate accepts the allotted seat and does not take part in further rounds.
• Float: A candidate accepts the seat but remains open to getting a better choice in a later round.
• Online document verification: Documents can be checked through the online counselling system.
• Digital seat resignation: Candidates can surrender a seat through the official online process.

These changes apply to admissions through the 15 per cent AIQ. They do not replace or alter the rules used for Tamil Nadu state quota counselling. In short, two counselling systems may run at the same time, but they do not follow the same rulebook. Counselling has enough forms already, so knowing which portal and rule set applies can save a lot of stress.

Document verification in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu Selection Committee has pointed out that some of the new MCC features are already part of the state counselling system. Candidates upload certificates and other required documents while completing the online application.

These documents are checked by the authorised officials during the counselling process. Candidates do not need to submit the same documents for repeated checks at every stage.

However, online verification does not remove the need to carry original documents. After seat allotment, candidates must report to the allotted medical or dental college. The college will check the original certificates before completing admission.

Students should keep both original documents and clear copies ready. Common documents may include the NEET UG scorecard, admit card, Class 10 and Class 12 certificates, community certificate where applicable, nativity proof and other certificates listed in the Tamil Nadu prospectus. Candidates should rely on the official document list for their category and course.

Rules for giving up an allotted seat

A candidate who wants to surrender an allotted seat must use the official online counselling portal. The Selection Committee will not accept requests sent through offline methods.

This means students should not depend on letters, email requests or visits to an office unless the official notice asks them to do so. The portal will provide the correct steps, dates and instructions for seat surrender.

Before giving up a seat, candidates should check the rules on eligibility for later rounds, fee refunds and any penalty. These conditions can depend on the counselling round and the applicable government guidelines.
