The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has released the schedule for NEET UG 2026 counselling. The process will cover MBBS and other undergraduate medical courses under the All India Quota, as well as seats in deemed and central universities.
The first round for deemed and central universities will start on August 4, 2026. The academic session for the 2026-27 batch is set to begin on September 8, 2026. Students should keep these dates close, since missing a choice-filling or joining deadline can affect their admission.

The first round will run for about two weeks. Candidates who receive a seat must follow the joining rules within the given time. The stray vacancy round is meant to fill seats that remain open after the regular rounds. It is not a stage to ignore earlier deadlines and hope for a lucky seat at the end.
State quota counselling schedule
State counselling authorities will conduct admission for state quota seats. Their dates differ from the MCC schedule, so candidates must track both processes if they plan to take part in more than one counselling stream.

What has changed in NEET UG 2026 counselling?
MCC has introduced changes to make the process easier to follow. One key change is the removal of mandatory physical reporting for candidates who choose a seat upgrade.
Under this change, a candidate who opts for an upgrade may not need to report in person at the current college at that stage. This can reduce travel, paperwork and the risk of missing a deadline while waiting for the next seat result. Candidates must still follow the instructions shown on the MCC portal and complete any required online steps.
The changes aim to make counselling more transparent and student-friendly. Still, students should read each allotment letter with care. The word “upgrade” may sound simple, but admission rules can be less simple than a school timetable.

- Fill and lock course and college choices before the deadline.
- Check the seat allotment result on the official MCC or state website.
- Read the instructions for accepting, upgrading or exiting a seat.

Common documents may include the NEET UG admit card, scorecard, identity proof, Class 10 and Class 12 certificates, category or income certificates where applicable, and other documents listed by the counselling authority. Candidates should keep both scanned files and printed copies ready.
How to avoid missed deadlines
Create a simple date list with four headings: registration, choice filling, result and joining. Set reminders a few days before each deadline. Also check for updates at least once a day during an active counselling round.
MCC has asked participating institutions, state counselling authorities and designated agencies to follow the schedule strictly. Candidates should do the same. A seat offer is only one part of admission. Registration, document checks, fee payment and joining all matter.
