Karnataka To Teach AI From Class 6 And Build India's First AI University

Remember when computer class meant learning to type without looking at the keyboard? Well, Class 6 students in Karnataka are about to have a very different experience. The state government has announced a big plan to make Karnataka an AI-first state, and it starts with kids barely old enough to reach the top shelf.

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar shared the news on X, calling it a vision to build an "AI-native Karnataka." That's a fancy way of saying the state wants AI woven into everything, from school lessons to research labs to the data centres that power it all.

AI Lessons Start Early

The plan includes AI education starting from Class 6. The idea is simple: the earlier students understand how AI works, the better prepared they will be for jobs that don't even exist yet. Think of it as teaching kids to swim before they get thrown into the deep end of the tech world.

There's no word yet on what the actual syllabus will look like. Will it be coding basics? Machine learning concepts explained through cartoons? We don't know. But the intent is clear: give students a head start rather than have them scramble to catch up in college.

India's First Government-Led AI University

Here's the part that caught everyone's attention. Karnataka plans to set up India's first government-led AI University in Bengaluru. Most AI-focused institutes today are private or attached to existing universities. This one will be built from the ground up with a single focus: training people in AI and emerging tech.

Bengaluru already has a reputation as India's tech capital, so this move makes sense. It's like adding a specialised wing to a house that was already the biggest on the street.

Details on admissions, courses and timelines haven't been shared yet. So if you're already imagining yourself walking through its gates, hold that thought for a bit longer.

An AI Hub For Everyone

Alongside the university, the state wants to build a dedicated AI Hub. This space is meant to bring together colleges, startups and industry players so they can work on AI projects together instead of in separate silos.

It's a smart idea. Some of the best innovations happen when students get to work alongside actual companies rather than just reading about them in textbooks.

Two Hyperscale Green Data Centres

AI doesn't run on good intentions alone. It needs serious computing power, and that's where the two hyperscale green data centres come in. These centres will provide the infrastructure needed for AI research, cloud computing and heavy data processing.

The "green" part matters too. Data centres consume a lot of energy, so building them with sustainability in mind is a thoughtful step rather than an afterthought.

Part Of A Bigger Plan

All these announcements fall under Karnataka's broader AI policy. The goal is straightforward: make the state a top destination for AI talent, research and business. Karnataka already leads in software and IT, so betting big on AI feels like a natural next step rather than a leap of faith.

Of course, big announcements are easy to make and harder to execute. Questions remain about the school curriculum, how the university will admit students, and when any of this will actually roll out. Governments across India have announced ambitious tech plans before, and not all of them moved at the same pace as the press release.

Still, if even half of this gets implemented well, it could change how a whole generation of students in Karnataka thinks about technology. Kids who grow up learning AI basics in school won't see it as some mysterious tool. It'll just be another subject, like maths or science, except with slightly more robots.
