Over 1,200 sources polluting water bodies in Punjab, reveals govt report

A recent report by the Department of Water Resources has identified 1,223 sources of water pollution in Punjab, affecting various water bodies across the state. The report highlights Amritsar with the highest number of pollution points (390), followed by Sangrur, the home district of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, with 159 sources of pollution.

The Principal Secretary of Water Resources, Krishan Kumar, has addressed this issue in a memorandum to all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) on August 23, urging them to take necessary actions in their districts to curb pollution. This pollution, caused by untreated water from villages, municipal bodies, and other organizations being dumped into rivers and drains, violates both the Water Pollution Act and the Northern India Canals and Drainage Act, 1873.

Col Jasjit Gill (retd), an environmentalist leading a campaign to clean up the Buddha Nullah tributary of the Sutlej River in Ludhiana, described the report as an eye-opener, calling for the identification of polluters.

The report also reveals district-wise pollution sources, with other areas like Barnala (59), Bathinda (44), Jalandhar (82), and Patiala (66) contributing to the contamination of water bodies. The National Green Tribunal is closely monitoring the situation
