CSIR UGC NET December 2026: New Life Sciences and Biotechnology Discipline
NTA will merge DBT-BET with CSIR UGC NET Life Sciences and introduce Life Sciences and Biotechnology for the December 2026 exam.

The CSIR UGC NET December 2026 examination will bring a major change for students in life sciences and biotechnology. The National Testing Agency (NTA) will merge the Department of Biotechnology’s Biotechnology Eligibility Test, known as DBT-BET, with the CSIR UGC NET Life Sciences examination.
As part of this change, NTA will introduce a new discipline called Life Sciences and Biotechnology, or LS and BT. The new discipline will be available from the December 2026 examination cycle.
What is changing in CSIR UGC NET?
Until now, DBT-BET and CSIR UGC NET Life Sciences were separate examinations. From December 2026, DBT-BET will come under the CSIR UGC NET framework. This means eligible candidates from biotechnology and related fields will need to prepare for the new LS and BT paper.
The change may affect the syllabus, subject coverage and preparation plan for many applicants. Students should not depend only on older CSIR UGC NET Life Sciences study material. The revised syllabus must guide their preparation. Old notes may still help, but they should not be the only source. Even exam preparation has a way of asking students to update their files.
Revised syllabus for Life Sciences and Biotechnology
NTA has made the revised syllabus available in the CSIR UGC NET Information Bulletin. Candidates should read the syllabus before they begin their study plan. It will help them understand the topics included under the new discipline.
Students should compare the new syllabus with the topics they studied for DBT-BET or CSIR UGC NET Life Sciences. This can help them find common areas and new topics that need more time. A simple topic list can make this process easier:
- Mark topics that appear in both examinations.
- List topics added under Life Sciences and Biotechnology.
- Set more practice time for areas with numerical or research-based questions.
- Revise key concepts through short notes and mock tests.

Who can benefit from the examination?
The Joint CSIR UGC NET examination tests eligibility for several academic and research opportunities in Indian universities and colleges. Depending on the rules and the candidate’s eligibility, the examination may support:
- Junior Research Fellowship, or JRF
- Appointment as an Assistant Professor
- Assistant Professor eligibility and admission to a PhD programme
- Admission to a PhD programme only
These options may have different eligibility rules. Candidates should read the official information bulletin and check the conditions linked to the opportunity they want to pursue. A candidate aiming for JRF may need to review rules that differ from those for PhD admission only.
How candidates should prepare for LS and BT
Preparation for the new discipline should begin with the official syllabus. Divide the syllabus into small units and give each unit a target date. Focus on basic concepts first, then move to questions that test application and analysis.
Students who prepared for DBT-BET can revise their existing material and match it with the new LS and BT syllabus. They should also solve practice questions in computer-based test conditions. This will help them manage screen time, question selection and speed.
A useful weekly plan can include concept study, revision, previous question practice and one timed test. Keep an error log for questions answered incorrectly. Review it each week. Mistakes are less scary when they are written down and given a job.
